FSX-MS Navigraph Charts

Yeah I just picked one that I fly to regularly that I know has at least 1 STAR transition. Sounds like possibly a bug in PFPX so I'll probably post in their forum unless someone can shed any more light. Thanks for your help.

Basically, it's a simple change: instead of buying the actual chart, one-time, for perpetual use (but never updated), you buy a subscription to the always-latest charts for every airport, but you never own the charts, only access to them.  I'm fine with it - there are already plenty of subscription based services I use (Netflix for movies and TV, Spotify for music, etc).  I don't expect to keep a copy of a movie I watched on Netflix, but I have access to it for as long as I pay the $8 a month.

 

It's pretty obvious that we're moving towards subscription-based models in a lot of areas of daily life - for some things, it's a bargain, for others, it's not so good.  But I can tell you, without unlimited subscriptions, I could have never afforded the 17,000 songs in my Spotify library, or the 200+ movies and 30+ TV series I watched on Netflix.

As it happens Ray, I tried that last night in PFPX after a bit of searching on Aerosoft's forum, side-by-side with EFB. I couldn't get it to offer up any STAR transitions as the drop down box was always greyed out. As an example I tried an LSGG runway 23 ILS approach. For the route I selected the usual 'Auto' which will get me the STAR DJL1R. When I then select 'Edit' (for the route) I'll get the map on the RHS, as you say but only the STAR drop down is available for selection, and the last waypoint I see on the route is SOVAD. Whatever I do in terms of changing the STAR (or even switching the runway back and forth), the transition drop down is always greyed out. Yet in EFB, after selecting the STAR it gives me the correct choice of (just the one) SPR. Which is the VIA I need to select in the Airbus FMC. So either PFPX isn't working correctly, or I need the chart.

 

PFPX is correct because there isn't a transition and the star ends at waypoint GG514 and max 220 KT only with

ATC approval you may turn on to final base which is SPR the IF... and start the ILS 23 approach...

 

That's why you need charts as they do in the real world ;-)

I used to have the Navigraph desktop client for charts, and though the downloads were permanent, I always found the need to perform constant downloads to update my charts collection to be quite inconvenient, time consuming and bandwidth intensive. I switched over to the browser-based Navigraph Charts Cloud service about a year ago, and much prefer it to the old desktop client. If I need a single chart for a specific airport, I can fetch it quickly, with the assurance that though it may not be the most current r/w chart, it will always be the most current that Navigraph offers.

 

I am really pleased with the quality of the new LIDO charts. I currently access the Navigraph Cloud using the Safari browser on my iPad, but when the new iPad Navigraph app comes out, it should be even more convenient.

However, I am not questioning the subscription approach, which is also the only one possible when content changes dynamically as airport charts. The real problem, in my view, is that Navigraph is too expensive for what they offer:

1. Very few airports compared to what you may need if you also fly in smaller airports.

2. No plug-in or interface to view charts within the simulator. 

3. No choice to select single areas, regions or bunch of airports to customize your purchase. I like to spend my money for what I use or plan to use. I don't need most of airports they offer in their global package, because chances I will fly in some areas are minimal. Conversely i would like to have smaller airports in areas I fly in which are not included in their package.

 

Those above are, in my opinion, very strong limitations. For the moment, I prefer to limit my subscription to the FMS data.

Hello, the problem with the new navigraph chart browser (beginning with vers 5.xx) is - you can access your charts only as long as you have an actual subscription. Previous version 4.xx of chart brwoser works as long as it is installed without actual subscription, then not updated of corse. This means you have to pay contineously. On other hand you will get some extras like like lido charts and cloud functions.

Can I ask someone with EFB, being an in-game application, does it alter FPS much?

Nope  don't  see much   issue  using  Aivlasoft efb here,  than again   I not  a fps  watcher  here though

Thanks. Tried EGKK to EDDM and yes, the thing I needed to get from the STAR to the ILS approach was on the chart for EDDM. So that's what I will look out for.

I love the navigraph charts,  I find it saves me a lot of trouble of trying to dig around on the net to find charts for non- u.s airports when I am flying the 777.

 

If you fly anywhere in the world other than the U.S online I find it a must have, please have charts if you are going to fly online.

It is free alright, but they also want Tail Number, Aircraft Type, Performance, Equipment, so will they except my PMDG 77W?  :o

I get my charts from Flightaware.com. Their charts come in PDF format and can be saved anywhere on your computer. To use those charts on an EFB, simply save the chart from the web page (do not open first) and then open the .PNG file using MS Paint. Save as .JPG and place them in the appropriate EFB folder on your computer.

You mean FltPlan.com?  FlightAware doesn't offer charts IIRC...  As for FltPlan, they're great, especially for Canada, but they don't cover the rest of the world.  I mainly use FltPlan and free charts on the internet, but those are often very out of date. I like the LIDO charts I saw so far - not sure if I'll subscribe to Navigraph Charts, but I might try a month.

FlightAware doesn't offer charts IIRC.

They do for US airports. The charts come directly from FAA.

I'm really loving the new clean look of the LIDO format for these charts. Question, is it possible to somehow pay once and own all the charts worldwide? I know Jeppesen has this but is quite expensive. I don't see navigraph offering this on their website unless I've missed something. I would love to permanently own the charts.
