I think you're citing what I would call an extreme situation. In that case the mods should warn the elite user his comment was inflammatory and if it was me I'd lock him out of that thread and would consider removing his comment as it's not adding anything constructive to the discussion. Do we really want people like that in AvSim?

 

The sad part is that it is actually quite common, and from what I've seen, it's not just the long-time users but even the mods who join in. It happens on almost every forum I visit (including non flight-sim ones) that has this feature, and new users who complain about it are simply banned or told to go elsewhere.

 

However, I'd much rather have the like button instead of users replying with "+1" posts :-)

in the latest IPS (forum software) as the admin you have the option to use Dislike/Like or only Like option;

using Like only eliminates any negative unexplained response; I run this on our dedicated support forums,

 

you also have the option to show who gave you the like; which I think is important as well as part of the communications;

That's what we don't like here.  Things or words that incite people to become inflammatory.  I do not like Facebook, never have, never will.  But you can go to the bottom of this topic/forum and hit the Facebook icon and "Like" this topic or this website all you want!

Neither does anyone I would imagine. But you have to treat people like adults and if they don't behave then lock them from a topic or even from posting if they'e serial offenders.

 

I didn't bother with Facebook until I retired but I find it a great way of staying in touch with ex-colleagues not to mention seeing what my family are up to! :smile:

Excellent point. I have made friends from AvSim and showing your support for a fellow member can only be a positive. Sceptics might take a different view.

Despite the fact that other Aviation forums have used like votes for years with no apparent issues, Avsim encountered controversy each time it was attempted. Honestly, I got the impression at the time that certain users were deliberately abusing the system with the aim of getting it removed. By the time it was, I was glad to see it go, as the behaviors being shown were completely contrary to the apparent age demographic of the site.

 

The whole "issuing warnings" and "abuse will be punished" thing was also mentioned previously, but I suspect it was just an unnecessary added chore for the mods.

 

Previous experience makes me think that unfortunately such a system can't work, here.

 

If it is brought back though, I hope I'm wrong.

Has any more thought been given to my suggestion? I'm not sure if the AvSim team have regular 'virtual' meetings to discuss such things.

 

Would be nice to at least give it a trial and see how things go. :wink:

It won't happen as long as we are in Performance Mode. As of right now, if I had to vote, I would vote against it. Moderators already are being criticized when they warn someone, suspend them for trolling, and other actions and this would just add to their duties. We already had the like/dislike feature and it did not work. Tom reluctantly had to remove it when some members got very upset with their ratings. There is no other flight simulation website that does this to my knowledge. It most likely will not happen. We appreciate your suggestion though.

Very disappointing to hear that people can get so touchy in what is meant to be an adult forum. Just to reiterate I'm not talking about accumulating 'likes'. You wouldn't be able to see how many you had. Just that if I liked a post from someone I could indicate that without having to quote the bit and post.

 

Fully understand your workload during busy times and wouldn't want to add to it.

There is no other flight simulation website that does this to my knowledge. It most likely will not happen. We appreciate your suggestion though.

Just as a heads-up, the Aerosoft forum, the X-pilot.com forums, and the Orbx forums have had the upvote/Downvote/like feature for a long time. (implemented it at almost the exact same time as Avsim originally did)

 

I was always puzzled why Avsim encountered such difficulties with the system when other sites were able to implement it with apparently nothing even close to the same personality issues. In that I was disappointed, that a relative few were able to derail what should have been a positive feature.

Well said HiFlyer. I 'like' your post. Add to your list the FS Labs forum. Say's a lot about the type of people this forum attracts.

Never once under the old system did I dislike a post.  The old adage if you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything at all sums it up for me.  My post count skyrocketed after the like/dislike button disappeared, but I would still prefer to see a like only button

Good point. But some people love to make controversial statements just to stir things up. I'd have a warning system. 5 strikes and you're out for 3 months.

 

More work I know for moderators but if such a system was in place it would certainly make people think twice before starting an argument. Not the same as a different opinion. We can all have those.

It's back... It's a built in system we disabled after some negative shenanigans.  I have enabled the positive one only.
