Is P3D worth repurchasing PMDG Products?

Featured Replies

With all due respect, I bought both FSX and P3D NGX license, I also got triple 7 license for P3D, so it's not that I don't support them (I think that customer support is best shown in that way).

What I meant is, paying more than for original version, while other offer it for free or for upgrade price is really confusing and I haven't find 1 thing which would justify this for end user, although I got myself the NGX as I love 737 and had no other option.

Look at A2A - if you got yourself FSX version, you still got option to upgrade to bundle and refund what you already paid. To me that is really customer-friendly approach.

Yes, free market is great, but also free world is cool as we can express our opinions. ;)

And Steve, true, "rip off" is harshly said, but that is "specific" approach to pricing really.

In the real world software costs a lot of money, I hate to think of the cost for my development tools and kit. Many addons are generally undervalued and we are lucky to get stuff like the PMDG, even at the asking price. I'm a big fan of the MJCQ400 and they are great guys there, if they can do it for less cash doesn't mean others can.

I agree that most FSX simple aircraft you can modify in a few minutes to work in P3D, often don't need modifying but there's a few things to do to be correct and proper. Then a few weeks work sorting out the installer, that can become several months depending n the complexities of the aircraft and it's accompanying software configuration programs and so on. When they don't actually make "a living" out of it, mostly it's all passion driven work, how can they justify giving it away free? Then under the hood there's enough changed in P3D to mess the developer about for months, and it's still in development. So that can bear down on the developer a lot if they have very complex system integration. Some P3D addons are still being developed as we speak.

Fair enough. Yes, I understand that more complex aircraft might need extra work to make it work in P3D. In which case an upgrade price should suffice. The way FSL are going to implement it.

By the way, I don't have a problem with the fact that PMDG products are more expensive for P3D. If extra work is needed to make it functional in P3D then so be it. I'm not a developer and I have no idea how much extra work is involved, but I'll take them at their word. It's the "paying twice" I have a problem with.

the PMDG 737 and 777 are the only aircraft I use, so I decided to repurchase everything after testing P3D over a year ago.  Well worth it in my opinion since I only fly PMDG, and I always want an improved simulator experience.  If you don't use PMDG often, then stick to what you have.

I know what you mean very much so. But remember that often these kind of products come with support and updates so in those cases we're not paying twice for the actual product. I would have to pay a fee to get support for very expensive software in use here. Software gets a bad deal in our minds because a lot of it is moved (copied) from one product to the next. Continuous design and development of physical products, we expect to get all that cleverness made into the next iteration and we happily pay for it.

I guess nobody here really would expect a free upgrade to P3D. A small upgrade price would only be fair to be honest. I am not a software developer, but PMDG sure didn't start from scratch on porting their addons over. This doesn't justify charging customers more than 100% of the price. In fact, the FSX versions of PMDG aircraft technically even work in P3D, you're just not 'allowed' to do so.

Again you're making a big leap thinking that they can take a copy of the code and add a few lines to it - hey presto - P3D version. They may be able to sort of do that but it's not what you pay for. Also since it won't wear out and have to be replaced it lasts forever. Imagine if we all wore shoes that lasted forever - see any shoe shops left?

OK, I believe this one has run it's course. The OP has plenty of opinions to ponder.
