In my brief testing I found 3D Vegetation (SpeedTrees) and Dynamic Reflections caused noticeable FPS drops.

I don't really like those so call SpeedTrees. I know it fills in a lot of gap, but they don't look convincing to me. Makes me feel like every place looks like Georgia with the huge pine trees. That's fine in the south east, but every where else is unrealistic.

All you people getting 30 fps with max traffic, what are your other settings?

Maybe with a Titan X Pascal, otherwise no chance. If you fly to mayor Intl airports no way to getting 30 fps with traffic. Most of the people lower the other settings extreme. Almost no autogen.

Cool thanks. All the bragging I've heard over the years of flightsimming of "I get 500 fps in London" Well if all your scenery sliders are to the left no wonder your fps are that high.

Yeah I mean just take a look at youtube. Even people with Titan X cards have only 30 fps in New York, which is pretty good actually but not for that price of a graphics card. In no other case people lying so much when it comes to FPS and PC hardware in general. A never ending story...

Wow, Nytro, why you post bashing all these threads?

We get it, you are not happy with v4.

You can request a refund from LM.

I'm getting a little over 30 FPS with full weekly UT Live traffic at FSDT/Flightbeam KLAX and KSFO.  I expect it to drop down to around 25 when I add a PMDG level of aircraft.  i7-6700k and GTX 970.  Most settings are about 3/4 of the way to max.  Dynamic lighting disabled.

This is incorrect.  I have a Skylake 6700k OC at 4.5, and a 980 Ti (only 6GB vram) and a 144Hz G-Sync monitor...  I get consistent fps in the high 40's-low 60's range in the usual problem urban areas of Seattle, LA and Chicago depending on the specific locale.  I am running unlimited frames (which is now default, by the way) - seems to eliminate or nearly eliminate stutters for me with my G sync monitor, which was never possible in v3 (always had to lock frames).  This is with AI at about 35% (which is plenty - any more than that and you can't get in a word edge-wise to ATC) and plenty of vehicular and water traffic.  I just flew slaloms through the skyscrapers in Chicago in the Extra, and the sim is quite a bit smoother and more responsive than anything I have ever experienced previously in FSX/P3D.  You can actually really feel the A2A flight model now on the C172 because of the fluidity, whereas before it would get kind of masked by the graphics rendering.

I have not totally settled on optimum sliders and I am definitely not maxed out on every setting.  But so far I haven't had to make any compromises that are unacceptable.  I believe my autogen in the urban areas is Max for Scenery Complexity, Medium draw distance (which is plenty for me - no sense drawing stuff I can barely see anyway) and Dense buildings and trees.  Outside of the big cities I can go even more aggressive with the settings.

Back to the original poster's question:

The biggest hitters for my system are:

- Speedtrees - which I think look ugly in addition to performing poorly, so I turned them off in favor of the conventional trees;

- Casting terrain and vegetation shadows (I can have everything set to receive shadows however)...  I am able to run all of the other shadows on Ultra and max distance, and frankly with the improved dynamic lighting I don't feel I am missing much;

- My 6GB graphics card chokes if I try to run 8X SSAA or Ultra textures in the high density areas, but the 4X SSAA and 2048x2048 is frankly working just fine for me.  Anti-aliasing is dramatically improved (except for the runway marking "jaggies" that STILL haven't been improved from FS98 days) - the A2A C172 for example, which was horribly aliased for me in V3, now looks quite nice.  There seems to be no impact of AA settings on clouds, smoke etc;

- Autogen Draw distance above High causes some problems in big cities, but I think even Medium in V4 is basically equivalent to the max setting in V3, and for me looks fine.

V4 feels demonstrably more fluid than V3 - there are a few stutters  at times in high density areas, but not even close to what I struggled with in V3.  The frame rate counter does not have the massive drops that one would see in v3 on unlimited, so v4 is definitely much better in that regard.  Also, the shadowing and lighting is now correctly done and quite impressive - no flashing or disappearing shadows when panning or anything goofy like that.  In fact, last night I flew the Electra over Seattle, and aside from the fact that it was actually remarkably fluid and felt like what I usually only experience in DCS, I actually noticed the edges of the cloud shadows passing over the wings just like you would see in real life.   That's one thing I have never seen even in other sims to this point.

Granted, all of this is still with stock scenery (though I did install Flightbeam KIAD and saw no performance drop at all), no weather engine, etc, so we will see what impact an Orbx region or Active Sky has once they are released.  But at least with default installation, performance is markedly improved.

I would caution anyone to not make conclusions based on Youtube videos - I had the same initial negative reaction to some of what was posted, but once I installed and ran v4 myself (fully intending to use the 60-day refund option if I was not satisfied), it became clearer how much has been improved in terms of performance.  There is really no harm in trying it with the very generous refund policy that LM offers.  I am not uninstalling v3 anytime soon, but at least initially this seems to be a solid platform.

I thought the same thing - they are really ugly from the air.  They all look like thin scrawny spruce trees.  I turned them off as well.

Biggest hits for me -

1) Dynamic autogen (turned it off - didn't like it anyway)

2) Autgogen draw distance. I think medium is the old P3D default for this (before v4 allowed you to change it) Every step above medium sees a 10 FPS drop for me.

I don't use the shadows other than in cockpit and on the user aircraft (default settings) so I cant comment on that.

I will say the TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP=9 (Only have a 1070 so not using 10) works a treat and really makes the tiles look sharp. Very good. Like a new sim. I would like to push the autogen out further a bit but I don't like the FPS drop.

Thanks so much!

I've been testing for so long to find out why my p3dv4 performance is even worse than p3d v3, given a powerful machine with 1070 and i7.

Disabling Dynamic Autogen gives me 5-10 fps! It is the root of all EVIL in my p3d lol.
