X-Plane 11.10 Beta

Don´t feed the troll.

The current state of software development is that beta's are a kind of preview. Not everybody new to X-Plane is aware what beta software in reality means (buggy and slow due to internal checkings). I don't think he is trolling, but that his expectations are wrong. It will take at least a few more cycles through the mill before the beta is really useable (at this moment, we are at this stage: if the app starts at all, we are good).

It's a huge update from the previous versions.

Developers will also certainly have to adapt their products to the new FDM features, meaning it'll take time, between LR beta cycle and the aircraft designers reviewing their models to make them profit from what is now available in XP11....

Let's give them some time - it's worth the wait I guess.

The others here mentioned how betas work. Meanwhile, here are the release notes if you want to see everything that's new (scroll past the new airport list):

http://www.x-plane.com/kb/x-plane-11-10-release-notes/

The two big features that most people will notice right away, because much of the rest is "under the hood," are the new G1000 GPS (included in a new Cessna 172 and the Cirrus jet), and the ability to save joystick and keyboard settings separately for each aircraft. That's something we've wanted for years, and a native G1000 is going to make a lot of people very happy.

X-Plane and Microsoft Flight Simulator on Windows 10
i7 6700 4.0 GHz, 32 GB RAM, GTX 1660 ti, 1920x1200 monitor

And the under the hood stuff brings unique, also long waited / asked for features into X-Plane 11, and a really promising future, even if it'll take developers some work to bring their aircraft to a state that can make them profit from these new features....

Of course there are bugs, it's a beta!

Hi,

I did some testing regarding the right roll inflight. And I took three screenshots.

First one is from XP11.05, the other two are from 11.10b3. They show the lift distribution of the wing.

I used to have the wing start right beneath the fuselage, where in reality there should be no wing, but I did it anyway because of lack of climb rate.

But for the third pic I moved the inner portion of the wing out, which completely removed the right roll.

It seems to me the asymmetric lift distribution due to propwash is stronger now, or the prop torque got weaker??

Excellent test marcus! I totally forgot the part of the wing hidden in the fuselage that most XP aircrafts feature.

From your tests, looks like the helical propwash hitting this hidden wing is causing the right roll.

Now that's an interesting problem to solve. The hidden wing is usually necessary to model the carryover lift over the fuselage (infact it's also modeled in real life, when doing aerodynamic analysis or design). But of course, not being a real wing, the helical propwash has very limited effect on that area.

I wonder how can Austin solve that issue.

I made another discovery.

Looks like that the new feature of control surfaces moving by themselves due to airflow, is also active while in flight.

For example, the turbulence, the change of angle of attack/sideslip, and even the change of propwash, cause the control surfaces to move by themselves.

So, apparently, all the aircraft in X-Plane have now a stick-free behaviour (in theory less stable).

While this may seem visually more realistic, I wonder if it's the right choice. Also, this makes hard to model aircrafts with irreversible flight controls (e.g. FBW), where the controls surfaces do not move in response to change in airflow.

Wow. its a beta. if you arent happy with it go back to 11.05 the last public release.

Hey Murmur,

good find, but make sure you NILL the trim tabs in Plane Maker first.

I also assumed that was the case, but apparently it is not like so. The control surfaces are now moving due to the new way the core FDM calculates the airflow effects over the trim tabs, which varies with "q" (dynamic pressure )...

.) The stick free should then become visible in the cockpit, with the corresponding controls moving due to the wash effects on their commanded surfaces; Maybe they do, but I couldn't glimpse it...

.) when you make sure the trim tabs are NILL / Neutral in Plane Maker, and you also make sure you aren't inputting any trim settings for aileron or rudder or elevator, the controls don't move anymore...

They move along the flight * only * when the corresponding trim surfaces are out of NILL because the FDM calculates the effects of the dynamic pressure over those tabs.

Also, you don't see them moving bellow Vs0, so, for instance in a tail slide, your rudder and elevator will stay put at the top of the fall :-) - something I would love to experiment in my RL tailslides in the G103 :-)

Further to the above post:

In 11.10b3, using the default C172, aileron and rudder trim tabs set to 0.000 in Plane-Maker, I do see some rudder deflection variations inflight...

It might be my rudder pedals having spikes - can't say for sure ...

I also made sure there was no hidden Yaw-Damper being used by setting buttons for YD ON and YD OFF, and making sure YD OFF was set during my tests, just in case...

There are no aileron deflections.

Where is the steam version of the beta?? I want to betatest it me too. Unfair that only the people buying from xplane.com can join the beta, its alot of talented steam users to.

Reason being...

the C172 has it's vertical fin canted left a bit.... If you edit the Vert Stab and set it to 0.000 º cant, then there will be no resulting rudder defection...
