June 3, 20188 yr Hi I got a beefy PC and installed Orbx, PMDG (the usual stuff) and was amazed at the performance, not joke with traffic, weather and Uk2000 EGLL I was getting 27fps! However, I ran into an issue fast, my VAS would be used up quickly... I tried lowing settings, but the VAS issue did not go away. I have a decent GPU: GTX1060 6GB so I thought Steve's Dx10 fixer would put some of the load onto my GPU so it would free up VAS, am I correct? If not please explain why 🙂 Again, no performance issues, just high VAS. I have previewed dx10 and all FPS is good. Looking forward to replies! -Ollie Specs: i5 8600K 8GB RAM Z370-P GTX 1060 6GB i5 8600K @4.5Ghz 16GB RAM GTX1060
June 3, 20188 yr 27 FPS? Is that all? You really should be getting 40+ FPS with that machine, even using those addons. Are all your settings maxxed out? June 3, 20188 yr Author Well I get 27FPS at the minimum, yeah normally 35-40 and my setting's are nearly maxed. But i do run Ultimate traffic live so that eats a chunk of VAS! -Ollie i5 8600K @4.5Ghz 16GB RAM GTX1060
June 3, 20188 yr Ok makes better sense now. Caleb Byers PC: HP Envy 750, Intel Core i7 6700 @ 3.4 GHz (max 4.0 GHz), 24GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce GTX 745 with 4GB Memory, 2TB SSHD Windows 10 Home 64 bit. If you measure your VAS at EGLL with traffic on and measure it again with traffic off, you’ll see that traffic doesn’t cost much VAS, unless the associated textures are over 1024x1024 which they usually aren’t. High VAS usually comes from the use of addons that use large texture sheets and/or 32 bit textures. If you run 32 bit rather than DXT clouds and water textures that will hurt. Some airports use 2048 and 4096 sized textures which add a lot of VAS. Some ORBX things like Vector can also contribute to high VAS depending on what options you have turned on. You really need to cater your install and options to what type of flying your doing. If airliners are your thing, use lower sized DXT textures and cut back on some eye candy so that you can complete a flight. Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
June 5, 20188 yr I have used the UK2000 (UKXtreme) and Aerosoft versions of EGLL and both have very high VAS footprints although the UKXtreme version is slightly better. Couple this with a resource intensive airliner, Orbx FTX England scenery, a lot of AI aircraft and perhaps ground AI traffic and a weather addon and you have a recipe for the dreaded OOM. When I am flying a VAS intensive airliner into or out of UKXtreme EGLL, I use what I call a “bare bones” scenery cfg set that has Orbx England and other airports in the London area deactivated, AI traffic turned right down and ground AI turned off. Usually that will allow a flight without an OOM but even so VAS usage can still hit pretty high levels in this area. Bill
June 9, 20187 yr Yes. I moved to DX10 because I was getting VAS warnings flying an A2A plane over Orbx scenery. Not had a si gle warning in 3 years since I moved to DX20, I also fly basic airliners into complex airports both long hail and short haul. - Paul Elliott http://www.avsim.com/topic/450607-amy-johnson-london-to-australia-attempt/

Bill
June 11, 20187 yr You can download Process Explorer here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/process-explorer Intel 10700K @ 5.1Ghz, Asus Hero Maximus motherboard, Noctua NH-U12A cooler, Corsair Vengeance Pro 32GB 3200 MHz RAM, RTX 2060 Super GPU, Cooler Master HAF 932 Tower, Thermaltake 1000W Toughpower PSU, Windows 10 Professional 64-Bit, 100TB of disk storage. June 11, 20187 yr These and other suggestions are also in the AVSIM CTD Guide. Regarding the Process Monitor, we provide a link as well as showing how to set it up so that only FSX and FSX addons are being loaded. The Process Monitor does not work well if you have Windows and other programs showing up as being loaded. You just want to see what is happening with FSX and FSX addons. We have images too on how to setup. It is sometimes amazing to see what all is loading during your flight! I use it too to see what is being loaded at startup and then while loading the flight. June 11, 20187 yr Author Ok can you give me an indication of VAS that you start off with? When Im at Gatwick, Aerosoft airbus and Orbx (low settings) I start off my flight with only 21% which crashes the second i start my approach 😞 -Ollie i5 8600K @4.5Ghz 16GB RAM GTX1060

When Im at Gatwick, Aerosoft airbus and Orbx (low settings) I start off my flight with only 21% which crashes the second i start my approach 😞 -Ollie If I start FSX using the default Baron at a default airport without active Orbx scenery in that area I usually have something less than 3GB of VAS remaining on my system (on average about 2.6GB). If I then switch to an addon aircraft and move to an addon airport in an area of Orbx scenery, then the VAS remaining will decrease, the magnitude of the decrease depending on the demands of the aircraft/airport. I don’t have the Aerosoft Airbus Extended but if you are using this I would think that like many glass cockpit aircraft with complex systems it would have a significant VAS footprint and if you then add in UKXtreme Gatwick (also relatively high VAS footprint) together with Orbx England scenery then I would not be surprised if you start nudging the 4GB threshold. You may also have other airports/airfields active in the surrounding region and these may add to the VAS usage when you take to the air as FSX detects them nearby. If I am flying something like the Quality Wings 787 or PMDG 777 out of a large (high VAS) airport like Heathrow or Gatwick, I usually deactivate all my other addon airports except for my destination airport. I also usually turn AI traffic right down and deactivate Orbx England which will save a little more VAS. Although, like most simmers, I would prefer to keep everything active, by taking these fairly drastic measures I can usually complete the flight in FSX without an OOM. One of these days I might move to P3Dv4! Bill
June 12, 20187 yr You can never start out showing 4GB's of VAS and most of the time I barely have 3GB's left when the situation is fully loaded. Here is a flight I took from FSDT KLAX to FlightBeam KSFO HD over Orbx SoCal_NoCal scenery in the PMDG 737. As you can see at the end of the report, I ended up with about 417MB's of VAS which is sufficient to land the aircraft. You can also see the fluctuation of VAS. Starts out at over 3GB's left, then down to over 1GB left after loading the PMDG 737, then it goes up to over 2GB's then to less than 1GB during the flight, then back up over 1GB and then back down to 400-1GB of VAS remaining on landing.
