FSX - The Last Word on Dual Core

Yes, it is 'must' read for those thinking that multiple CPUs will solve all their FS problems once and for all.Michael J.

"I've tried to provide some explanation but it's quickly drowned out by the waves of claims, opinions and speculation."That would make a great(if not very wordy) Tee-Shirt! :D It does seem lately that tdragger's msgs are just getting lost in the white noise anticipation of the final product. Seems that whenever he repsonses to something its quickly replied upon into oblivion. ;)

I think the bigger problem are those folks that have somehow come to believe that Vista, DX10, multi-core CPU's, etc are going to be the Holy Grail of FSX. That just isn't going to be the case. We'll suffer performance problems with FSX just like we've suffered performance problems with all the prior versions. And we'll eventually solve many/most of those problems just as we always have. But all this thinking about a new OS and new hardware being the cure is just speculative wishfull thinking.Doug

Good post.Even though FSX will only use threads a little, with multi core can't add-ons like Active Sky and Radar Contact be set to run on a different core to FSX. Surely this will make everything run more smoothly?

...all the new development in CPU like Quad core etc does not have much value for Flight Sim. HT or Dual core may have some benefit..after that.. its diminishing marginal returns. What we need is simply faster single core CPU. What we need is a HT 10Ghz CPU.;)Manny

Have you noticed we haven't seen any "faster" CPU's for some time now? The clock speed wars seem to have run their course, at least for the time being. In fact, many of the first line computers I'm seeing advertised now are actually slower than my 2 year old machine.Besides, the buss is still a bottleneck even with higher clock speeds. There are other considerations as well besides just clock speed.Still, it's curious that both Intel and AMD have backed out of that race right now and seem to be focusing on dual core technology. Maybe that's because the computer-buying public is so excited about it.It will be interesting to see what they pick next to take market share from one another.Dewey

>Besides, the buss is still a bottleneck even with higher clock>speeds. There are other considerations as well besides just>clock speed.Amen. It seems like everyone is on the "CPU speed" bandwagon withouth realizing there is plenty of CPU power to run FS with plenty to spare. What really is in short supply are all sort of "bandwiths" (including the memory) to pump all this data through the main bus and onto the video card.Michael J.

have you seen the performance of the new Intel Core 2 processors? Its a bad a** processor! The 2.6 ghz version will run FEAR at 30% higher frame rate speeds than Athlocn FX-60!! It runs quake at 70% higer frame rates than my 3.4ghz system!!!! That is fast!! Check the following link and choose different combination of processor comparisons and benchmarks used for those comparisons. http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html
