I doubt that even a single line of legacy code will be used in MSFS. We are talking about decades here and it would take more effort to properly implement ancient code into modern applications rather than developing a module from scratch.

I agree with this

They have said that a new sim engine will be used.

I'm getting the feeling I'll finally need to upgrade my crusty old ADSL to play this properly when released,  especially at any high resolution.

No doubt there will be an offline mode with probably similar autogen scenery and maybe some more simplified photoreal scenery that is available with the current sims, but the only way to get all that full hi res experience will be to stream all the pre-rendered visuals from the azure servers.

Maybe they'll have a fully online version hosted on their project xcloud service, so maybe no need for a high spec PC anymore.

Makes sense all the real-time weather processing and rendering would be done in the cloud and streamed too.

If this is the case, based off Google Stadia info as a reference, will be looking at probably 35 Mbps for 4k.

The issue is there are many countries and places in this world were you cannot get such speeds, in the UK the of com says 95% of the United Kingdom now has access to the super fast broadband, classed as 24Mbps+

I can only get 11Mbps at home during peak hours, there is an alternative broadband provider which promised me 30Mpbs at 5 times the cost.. so.. reality vs practicalities will meet causing havoc for "streaming games".

I guess the less the population in a given country / zone, the contention levels are lower and better bandwidth can be achieved. In 2011 only in South England there were living 27.9 Million people

In any case, it would be can of difficult to tell my wife and daughter: Honey let's move to Norway so I can have 500mpbs bandwidth at home in order to play Streaming games.. hmm that will go well .

My point is, the "Entire" world is not ready yet for this technology..

S.

I don't think that's true, I live in Lyon wich is the 2nd city in France and I get around 800 Mbps at peak hours...

It's basically an infrastructure thing. You need fiber optics to your home, or very close to your home.
You can't have 100+ Mbps on a ADSL-connection.

Of course, I didn t think people were using ADSL anymore. For *** sake, they're deploying fiber optics in africa in villages that dont even have electricity. I am not even mentionning 5g wich will be the new standard in a few months or years. That would mean Microsoft thinks a bit ahead, surprise ! 🙂

Actually, not every simmer lives in a 1st world country.

Even here in South Africa, there are many areas that do not have fibre yet!!

Just saying that this is the future and Microsoft is betting on that.

The same as they did with FSX, and you remember the furor that caused. 😄  How many years was it before we could run with better than minimum settings?

Trust me on this one:  not everyone has access to great Internet.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

So, those of us who have the bandwidth & speed, will be able to access MFS, the rest of us obviously not, & will have to use the standalone version/settings, IF required.

Also, here in South Africa, we pay for usage, & with excess usage, we get throttled down to a very slow speed.. Interesting times ahead!

Just wait a little bit, maybe today or next month you will find out their plan is not so dark for you 🙂

I live on the Côte d'Azur hinterland and the download speed never exceeds .600 Mbps 😉 ADSL2 in a vlllge 3.5 km from the exchange, end of the line.
