MSFS2020 reviewers used PCs with i7-8700K 3.7Ghz - 64Gb - 2080TI

Featured Replies

There must be a reason why pre-Alpha reviewers used PCs equipped with a huge 64Gb Ram and RTX 2080 TI.

Wondering if it is time to plan for 64Gb Ram and an RTX 2080TI for my new PC build?

16Gb and 32 Gb Rams may be too little for MSFS2020.

As the CPU was "only" an i7 -8700K running at 3.7Ghz and the GPU was a 2080TI with 11Gb Ram, it looks like MSFS2020 is using a lot of GPU power for the rendering tasks or that 6Gb Ram of an RTX 2080 is too little.

It could also be that the CPU was overclocked or running in Turbo Mode at 4.7GHz, even though the reviewer states i7-8700K @ 3.7GHz

Most interesting. If 64 Gb is  in the base specs, I suppose 128 Gb will be in the confort zone 😁 !

Why are you assuming that it is the base?

They had every intention of running it at max settings no doubt to impress the visitors.

Keeping in mind of course that it is also a pre alpha and performance optimization is not something they are taking care of yet.

If the RTX 2080 Ti was the limiting factor indeed, it means we will finally not be bound to the CPU anymore. Any modern processor with at least 6 cores should be fine.

Pretty sure this YouTuber was pushing the limits of what MS allowed to be videoed.

At 17:06 you get a clear view of some parts of the UI on the PCs in the background. Also on his monitor at 20:17. (Cue video being taken down in 3,2,1..)

I wouldn't read too much into the RAM.
It might be that they have a lot of memory usage optimisation to do. It could be as simple as they signed a contract to buy or rent 20 top end PCs and those were the default specs.

If we don't have the  "HT on or off ?" threads anymore, it will be all good  😁 !

The Xbox Scarlett will have 8 cores and 16 threads at a very low clock speed, so I imagine they will be optimising the simulator for that. This could be great for AMD's mid-range offerings, so shelling out for the top-end Intel CPU won't be necessary anymore.

Very unlikely it is actually using anywhere close to 64GB of RAM and an 8700K is modest. My 8600K was cheap and it’s at 4.8ghz on air. Same CPU but without the HTing.

Money will be spent on the GPU and that’s fine. Easier to chase one thing than constantly worry about a combination of things.

if a 8700 is modest, my 4770 is what ? Miserable, pathetic, ludicrous, all of the above 😃 ?  Don't answer me !

I can see how RAM could potentially be an interesting bottleneck though, with that 600km cloud draw distance and high LODs, not to mention since it's photoreal there are essentially no repeated textures. Crazy.

If you read up on project scarlet it uses SSD for ram this could be an indication that it`s optimised for streaming, something I think PC suppliers start to offer streaming PC`s.

Some of you just dont realize what kind of processing power is needed to push native 4k. Hence the 64gb ram which I highly doubt was fully utilized. 4k 60fps is still not fully possible yet and only a few select games can do 4k60 with 2080ti. We are talking about the entire city here. I am quite positive that the sim will be able to run at ultra settings at mid range gpus at 1080p 60fps. I must say that the sim seems to be extremely well optimised in its current state. No need to go for 4k resolution if you have a 1070 or 2060. Their engine also supports resolution upscale with temporal anti aliasing, and Sebastian Wloch mentioned in his interview with flightsim.com that if they set the resolution to 2560 instead of native 4k, and upscale it to 4k, the sim was able to achieve 80fps up from 41 on a 2080ti.

IMO 64GB has been a good idea for a while with any 64 bit sim, with xplane UHD mesh or p3d using the full suite of orbx addons I can easily use 40-60% of my 64 gigs. Good thing ram is a cheap upgrade.
