Try to convince me of VR

A 4 year old girl who couldnt even reach the pedals...

The same applies to my 4-year-old son, who knows nothing about PC games or mobile phones etc. (Thank God) But when he sees his father with this strange headset on his face! When he first came into the cockpit with the VR headset
He's been asking me to take him in the cockpit ever since,
I fly most of the time and he's a passenger, but he loves it very much!

I never bothered about VR either .... until a couple of months ago. I had read and watched a lot about VR in today‘s sims and I finally gave it a try by purchasing an Oculus RIft S. My first impression after setting up the headset was rather disappointing, because I had expected a better image quality. But after optimizing my P3DV4 and headset setup I immediately got hooked. Flying in VR is soooo much more realistic than just staring at a 2D monitor that I never since started a single flight without VR headset any more!

Luckily, I did not purchase a large 4k monitor, which was the alternative to the VR headset. The RIft S is easy to set up and very comfortable to wear, even if I fly for hours. I can use it with my glasses which perfectly fit inside the headset. In order to get a decent image quality I use oversampling with factor 1.6 to 1.8. The only real weakness of the headset is the sound, but since I added a light-weight in-ear quality headphone (directly plugged into the Rift S) this problem has also gone.

I used to hold a PPL and a glider licence for many years but gave them up a couple of years ago due to my age. My P3DV4/VR headset combo is a worthy, much less costly and really exciting replacement!

Ok guys I think its time to give you an update. After beeing bored for weeks with nothing to play and the index still unavailable I drove in the city and came back with an Oculus Rift S.

Plugged it in and went through all the demos that come with it and was kinda meh. Funny but like expected.

Tried VRporn which is a game changer 🙂 until I finally started up DCS.

My A10 was ready for takeoff on the runway and I put the headset on. I sit there and was like HOLY SH•T! I wanted to touch the buttons and the knobs so real it felt. Landing is so much easier and the feel of flying is unmatched.

I know understand the „can’t go back to 2D“ comment everybody expresses and  I am now one of these myself.

Yeah compared to 2D the graphics are much worse etc but the immersion makes up for that like 10x.

So what’s next? I still plan to get the Index once it’s available and will then sell the Rift.

I also bought the F18 and am waiting for the alpha of FS to support VR now.

thx for everyone here and in other forums who tried to convince me. You were successful 😉

welcome aboard! 😎

everything with a cockpit screams for VR, i also suggest you try one of the racing games with VR support! 😁👍

this is why home cockpits still have value in a post VR world.

So glad that you finally tried for yourself. And I really love to read those first time VR experiences on flight simming.

Welcome!

You're completely hooked when you try to lean your elbow on the cockpit side....nonchalantly.

I think that if it looked that sharp through the headset, there would be no arguing from most people. Also, posting videos like this is pointless because you’d see the same thing with a monitor and TrackIR.

Are you assuming...?

If so, to ensure you are informed; what you saw in that video - in the HMD the fidelity is even more profound for me.

Secondly, the video is not pointless (your subjective view) -- head tracking is the pinnacle for TrackIR (it goes no further), however, VR adds depth and real-time perception were skills learned in the VR environment relating to depth perception parallels and compliments real life skills within aviation.  If you can not fathom this simple concept; I rest my case.

Lastly, it seems you are mistaking VR representation as the same representation displayed on an external monitor - if you are, you really need to demo the above mentioned with a proper setup.

Too often much of the comments are premature.

Now, I shall log AVSIM and make a return flight out of Congo Town into Nassau deeply immersed in VR w/ my HP Reverb

But it is pointless if you’re using the video to try to convince someone of the benefits of VR. You get no impression, whatsoever, of the 3D effect produced by the HMD. My point was that I could have posted a video of the same flight using just TrackIR and the videos would have looked identical because you’re viewing them in 2D.

With regards to the last sentence in the quote above, it’s impossible to give someone an idea of the immersive effect of VR on a 2D screen so the sentence applies more to you than to me!

The best video I’ve seen recently comparing all of the popular VR headsets shows only the Pimax 8K X coming close to the sharpness shown in your video above:

i7-14700k | Asus ROG STRIX Z790-F Gaming WIFI | 32GB DDR5 RAM | MSI RTX 4080 Super | WD Black SN850X 1TB & 2TB | Corsair HX1000i ATX3.0 | MSI MAG401QR 40" monitor | Win 11 Pro 64-bit | Meta Quest 3

Sweviver works for Pimax.

At this point he is developing a growing reputation for videos that make other headsets look worse than reality.

Most headsets through the lens videos make very sure to let you know, sometimes with multiple warnings, that for technical reasons, generally due to positioning and focusing a camera, these videos only approximate what you would actually see.

Occasionally somebody gets lucky, usually with a GoPro and gets a good video, but it's fairly rare.

These are some of the best I've ever seen, and even then there's obviously great difficulty maintaining a good image for more than a few instants. People who actually use these headsets are the ones who know what it really looks like.
