October 12, 200619 yr Ok if I have read this right no more freeware because of the $500 dollar fee. I had never seen this before what has Microsoft done. Roy Chaffin topic was an eye opener the end of freeware and lower priced addons.
October 12, 200619 yr Can this be over come with xml gauges or will they have to be signed also and who is going to enforce this fee?
October 12, 200619 yr Noone. We talked about this at the AVSIM conference. It's not a "fee" exactly. If your software (programs or dlls) are not digitally signed, a security warning will pop up saying that it is not digitally signed and ask you to confirm that you trust the publisher of the program and want to run the program. This is a pretty standard Microsoft security approach when a program attempts to run another program that you didn't specifically tell it to run. Then you will be able to select an option to add that program to a trusted list, if I recall the talk correctly, which is an encrypted file within FSX, and then you won't be bugged about it again. That's what I remember, I didn't take very good notes, so someone confirm this for me.

You'll just need to know who you're getting the add-ons from because they won't have authentication.
October 12, 200619 yr >Ok if I have read this right no more freeware because of the>$500 dollar fee. I had never seen this before what has Microsoft>done. I think the problem has been terribly overstated. All you have to do is click "yes" to the dialogue box that pops up when loading an unregistered .dll, and you're done. So elegantly simple...No $500 fee. No end to freeware. No doom and gloom. No drama.Nick***Edit: Tdragger beat me by 1 minute. Good job Mike!***

October 12, 200619 yr Hi, I'm a bit confused. Will this be like installing an unsigned driver where you can just click 'I accept' and then the program installs and you never see the pop-up again or will it have to done everytime I load an add-on and have to be clicked for each gauge (i.e each gauge everytime I load)? If it is the first then I like Nick think this is being seriously overstated but if it is the second option I can concede that it would be annoying as ####.Jeremy

October 12, 200619 yr Thanks that had me a little nervous there.:-) This forum can get you going sometimes really glad the aces team has cleared up a lot of things for us.
October 12, 200619 yr Moderator >Read this.......>>http://www.roychaffin.com/fsx.htmlDave, there are many errors of fact, as well as a great amount of hyperbole in that bit of screed. The most glaring bit is this:"This aspect has a much more serious implication than you would initially think. FS has been and is as popular as it is, because of the amount of FREEWARE or cheap PAYWARE products that are available. Now for a developer to get a digital signature to include in his or her files, to stop these warnings, it will currently cost him or her $500 a year. Who is going to do that ?? So potentially, this has stopped FREEWARE and PAYWARE from small developers at a stroke."I've already stated here that there is already an effort underway at http://fsdeveloper.com to set up a "freeware developers" Certificate Authority, so that freeware authors of gauges and modules can obtain a FREE "Trusted Certificate" to compile into their releases.Even without such a "Trusted Certificate" though, the requirement for "manual approval" by the end user is ONE TIME, which is hardly any reason for someone to begin crying about the end of the world! ;) Fr.
