Passenger freaks out during Storm Ciara

Featured Replies

Storm Ciara forced an AirEuropa flight from Madrid to Amsterdam to return to Madrid after several failed landing attempts. Imagine sitting behind her.

As Jerry Lewis used to say: Hey, Laaaa-dy!!!

A few go-arounds on an Aer Lingus flight to EGBB also caused a fuss.

Beech Baron: Uh, Tower, verify you want me to taxi in front of the 747?
ATC: Yeah, it's OK. He's not hungry.

Love that Airplane clip. That's the way the world used to be before everyone go so sensitive.

A bit of typically inaccurate aviation reporting there it would seem, with one passenger claiming the airliner 'made four attempts at landing' (unlikely, not to mention being a deviation from established practice), when in fact it only made one attempt to land at Birmingham, which was aborted, before it went to Liverpool to land on its first approach.

I suspect they are confusing the term 'go around' with the action of repeatedly going around in a racetrack pattern when you are in a holding pattern, which was probably owing to it having a fair bit of fuel on board as a precaution, knowing a diversion and long hold times might be likely, which it then had to burn off prior to landing.

In such circumstances, it always makes me laugh when passengers complain about 'being kept on the aircraft' and 'having to wait for a bus' to transport them to their destination airport, if there is a diversion. What do they expect? A diversion is for their safety. Would they prefer to die in a crash because the airliner crew just decide to 'go for it' at their intended destination, in spite of the risk?

At Manchester, we were told by the C.A. A. and M.A.G. to possibly expect diversions and that we would have to deal with them if they came, as no doubt personnel at other UK airports were too. Which we don't mind, but this is unplanned extra work for all at the airport, often there isn't space on the stands for such flights, or if there is space, it is on stands which are less than ideal, and we also need ground service equipment for such things too. If a diversion does come, then yes we will deal with it, but not at the expense of the scheduled flights we are working on, so unfortunately that means passengers might have to wait a bit before we can get to the plane to do everything necessary to see them off the aeroplane and able to collect their luggage.

Similarly, whilst an airline is expected to provide alternate transport (or accommodation) for passengers diverted because of weather conditions, if they kept empty hotels and buses and drivers on standby all the time just for the few occasions when this occurs. That bargain basement airline ticket price tag would probably cost twice as much as it did, and then they'd really have something to complain about, in addition to the complaining that guy was probably also doing for having gone to the trouble of flying to and from Dublin to watch a Six Nations Rugby match, only to see his team get its @ss handed to it 24-14!

Yikes almighty! Get a grip woman. What on earth was that all about? I can't imagine why she even got on the thing in the first place. Perhaps the family would be better off sending her by post next time.
