Social distancing in Antarctica.  Even though no cases have been reported and Antarctica is in lockdown all community activities have been cancelled.

But penguin and elephant seals are ignoring the social distancing protocol.

Revisiting plague Inc.

It appears during this crisis that the game has skyrocketed in popularity. which says something, but I'm not sure what. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/08/arts/plague-inc-video-game-gaming-coronavirus-covid-pandemic.html

There's a strange feeling, watching this video....... I bet doctors have nightmares like this.

A weird little game not to be taken seriously, is now not nearly as funny.

Don't worry in the UK, one of our chief medical advisors who was so insistent of the lockdown measures got his bit of fluff to break to rules twice to come over and give him a back rub...

Ice station zebra is essentially a ship. And you know what happens on ships with the virus. The best time to begin the lock down is before anybody catches it. You know that, right?

Taken from the article that HiFlyer referred to:

Quote

Nick Jeffery, CEO of wireless carrier Vodafone UK, said on LinkedIn, the AP reported. "It's even more upsetting that even the small solace of a phone or video call may now be denied them because of the selfish actions of a few deluded conspiracy theorists."

Erm... I thought 4G is perfectly adequate for video via cellphones...? Now OK 5G is faster and should enable remote surgeries to be done in the future (a definite plus IMHO, https://www.raconteur.net/technology/4g-vs-5g-mobile-technology) and I'm not advocating the vandalism, but Jeffery apparently shedding crocodile tears over what amounts to a basic phone call and or video which 4G coverage will give you is just wrong.

plus the people there are all scientists and military personnel trained to take orders not a bunch of entitled, drunk spring breakers..  (not sure about the elephant seals though! )

EDIT forgot to add this:

Here's another possibly worrying aspect of a knock-on effect from the lockdown:

It's a difficult one for sure. In the article you linked to, the author writes that the message from all sides about her child is that: 'My boy is a drain on the system who, due to circumstances entirely beyond anyone’s control, is unable to contribute anything of any worth to society.' Whilst one cannot help but to have sympathy for her situation, this is an extremely disingenuous statement from her.

As stark and unpleasant an assessment that quote is, it is none the less true in - if not all respects - then in the respect of the complaint about the division of resources necessary to provide care. Yet it is phrased in a manner which attempts to muddy the waters of the issue by burying that unpleasant reality under a fallacious emotional plea which, in being untrue, has no bearing on the problem at hand. Nobody's going to win any popularity points for saying that, but it is a fact.

I don't think anyone with a heart worth having would deny that any child, regardless of its faculties, will be an object of limitless love for the parent and is in no way diminished from either giving or receiving that in a way which has immeasurable value regardless of any health condition. But to try and lump the idea that anyone might think this is not so, with an examination of the sadly not unlimited resources any nation has, is playing emotional blackmail.

There's no easy soundbite answer to the problem, but wrapping it up in an emotional straw man, as the author has done, is certainly not the way forward to a solution either. It gets us no further down the road toward a solution and if if I am honest, it sounds to me like the author is more bothered about the fact that they will have to take some personal responsibility for their duty of care instead of cheerfully handing it off to others at the expense of everyone at large. Now I may be wrong in that assessment, but that's the message I got from reading between the lines.

As I say, I'm sure I'll not win any popularity points for saying that, but there you go.

The problem is that people are burning all types of cell towers, whether 5G or not.

Your response is very appropriate Chock.  Triage is hard and heart breaking because it puts those performing it in the crosshairs of those who disagree with the performers decisions and diagnoses.

There is a television series in the US called Law and Order.  There was case of a doctor running a live-in clinic for autistic children.  He and his staff were experimenting with unproven techniques including electric shock and space deprivation in which one child died.

The doctor was tried and convicted of manslaughter and the clinic was closed.  One mother, accompanied by her severely retarded boy, came up to the prosecutor after the trial and asked what she was to do with her boy now.   There was no answer.

Corona virus has left a lot of people in the no-man's-land of what do I do now?  Unfortunately society has no answer.  Our current care system is aimed at the average,  The above average are able to work within that system and outside of it.  The below average are left to fend for themselves.  And for each one of them a poignant case can be made similar to the one the woman made about her son, both in the real life example you responded to and in the fictional example of a TV show.

People won't know the difference about cell towers. I tried searching for visual differences and all that kept coming up was 5G makes you sick, gives you cancer etc. conspiracy etc. absorbed by oxygen molecules so it screws us over etc..

I don't actually know if there is a discernible visual difference or not

What the towers look like is irrelevant as the underlying conspiracy is ridiculous and driven by fear and ignorance.

The 5G antennas are much smaller than 4G antennas due to the much smaller wavelength of 5G frequencies.

5G EM waves don't travel more than a few hundred meters, so there will have to be 5G antennas all over the place in order to have good coverage, and they will likely be nearer to the ground.  4G transmitters are located high up on towers, and there aren't as many of them, but they use higher power.  5G transmitters will actually use less power than 4G transmitters as they are much closer together.

We're all being bombarded with EM waves constantly, from the cellphone network and other networks, the wireless networks in our homes, etc., but the power is low enough that it shouldn't damage our bodies' cells.

So.......

Even with travel restrictions, we all have to leave the house sometimes, even if its just to get food. We know there's a pretty much worldwide shortage of PPE for frontline responders much less for regular people, but considering the situation and many state requirements, everyone has to find some way to protect themselves (or at least feel protected even if its false security) while outside.

When I leave the house, I'm confronted by people in a large variety of gear, from makeshift bandanas to actual N95's to blue safety masks, to pulling their jackets up over their faces, and even the rare, apprehensive-looking straggler with no mask at all, getting stern looks from passersby.

There's no conformity of any sort, and you can tell when entering a place like Walmart (or any other store) that the chains are not supplying to their employees. They are very obviously wearing anything they can find or make, and every man for himself.

Just from idle curiosity, since I know Avsim has a worldwide membership: Where are you all getting your masks?

How hard is it to get them?

Are you reusing them?
