What are the AMD GPUs like now with significant cloud/weather. I recall the sim used to run like a slideshow in weather.

I'm following this, as I am thinking of jumping nVidvia for 16 GB's at an 'obtainable' price. nVidia has been jacking us for years...with the minimal increase in on-board GPU vRAM...as the incentive if for nothing else, to get us to the next release.  Getting a modern tech, 16GB of FAST vRAM for under $600.00 is REALLY lookin' good to this guy... 🙂  For P3Dv5 and for that new MSFS we all hear about...lol.  Yep...looking to the future...

I have two machines, one for P3D which is an i5-9600k @ 5ghz and the RX 5700XT and the other machine is for general gaming (not used by me) which has an i7-9700k and a RTX2070.  In a head-to-head test of v4.5HF2 on both machines with all the trimmings, my i5+5700XT outperformed the i7+2700, especially in weather and also with dynamic lighting.  However, it still struggled with more than 4 layers of clouds.  In v5, Truesky doesn't appear to put much of a load on the GPU in clouds at all, so the software tech has evolved magnificently in that respect.  However, so far, the modern AMD cards simply don't work right with P3Dv5, and LM has been vague at best, saying they "submitted a ticket to AMD" - so who knows when or if it will ever be fixed. I'm hoping that a fix will come with the impending hotfix from LM, but honestly, I will be pleasantly surprised if it does in fact fix it.

Despite my v4.5 experience, I can't recommend an AMD GPU right now.  For the record, as I said previously, I did order a Radeon VII with 16GB of VRAM and put it into my computer a little over a week ago, did a full rebuild of the machine to test.  (a) it didn't solve the major CTD problem and (b) performance was a good 10%-20% lower than my 5700XT, so it was a non-starter for me - I boxed it up and sent it back.

that's the strange thing I can throw nearly everything on my radeon vii everything maxed out 4x ssaa at 4 k display it stays between 15 -20 fps I have seen vram usage of 12 GB no issue for the card. 

but sadly as cwburnett says performance is much more worse then with my 2080 TI.

Coming from an nvidia gtx970 with not enough Vram for the p3d v5, I bought a Radeon RX590 (8Gb of vram against 6 Gb for an nvidia and cheaper - but that's another debate)
So here is my feedback
After having cleanly cleaned the nvidia drivers and installed the driver offered by windows10 via the device manager for my new card: it turns nickel (I do not take into account the bugs that the LM hotfix will fix - enough has been said)
Never happy, I read everywhere on the forums that there is a tool called Adrenaline for ATI, so I install the software ...
Apparently, this utility also installs a new version of the drivers. (26.20.150 .... from April 2020)
I say to myself, nice, I will be able to pay my card with little onions ... except that ...
Without touching anything in the settings, I had lost in P3D the preview of the aircrafts. The small window remained desperately black.
I tell myself that it may come from the old shaders that I erase. Nothing works. I hack left to right anti-aliasing (I remember having the same problem with nvidia after a blow from Nvidia profile inspector. Hey no!)
Suddenly, back pedaling to the previous version of the drivers provided by Windows (26.20.12028.2 dated 16-08-19) and there, nickel, everything starts again without problem with a substantial gain of fps.
Well, if that can help some...

Interesting, I hadn't gone back that far...I only went back to the December 2019 driver, but if I'm reading you correctly, you used an August 2019 driver?  I know we have different cards, but I may try to get my hands on that era of driver for a test! Thanks for sharing!

Yes. After installed the card on my mother board, I let Windows install generic drivers. After I go to device management and want to update the drivers. It's a Windows10 driver.

Nota : I use Windows 10 - new build 2004 installed whith program insider

Disabled HT so I have now crazy 14 physical cores running @ 5 ghz all the time.

A Radeon vii @ 2100 to 2140 mhz but 15 -  20 fps. 

Strange thing is I see spikes to 30 fps. while I am flying directly over London, no issues with terain and as others say it's not a sideshow. 

Also reducing 4x sssa to 2x msaa and texture resolution to 2k makes not really a difference 

 

I think amd has to do something with the driver or hopefully the LM Hotfix helps.

So you're saying that the black preview window is fixed now? That is my only issue with rx 580.

Yes, it's fixed with these drivers

How about with the new hotfix?

donwloading right now, but lorby_si said that as soon as you add addons to the new version p3d won`t start anymore.
