My 1st day with my new "Super Rig"!

Featured Replies

All I have is the new FSX Demo. I pick up my retail copy tomorrow. However, after setting up my rig all day, I just want to let someone know how elated I am with the new FSX. Hopefully, the retail version will be as good.New Dell Intel 2 E6700 (2.88 Ghz with 4MB Cache)4GB DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz1GB NVIDIA GeForce 7950GX2 Dual GPU Graphics CardX-Fi PCI Sound Card20" Widescreen Dell Monitor (DVI)Started FSX Demo, and set to 1680x1050x32 resolution, Trilinear, Water at Mid 2.x, Scenery Dense, and left Autogen Sparse. Set Vehicles at 21. Target frames were defaulted to 17, so I just left it there.Well, folks, the sim was friggin' beautiful and it did not move off of 17 for a whole "go-around the island" and landing back at Juliana. I tried the Baron and the one man kite. When I get back from dinner with my wife, I'll experiment some more, but I believe I have the processor/video/ram combo that works. We'll see....because I'll be deleting this demo tomorrow and putting on the real thing. Just call me "Excited in Allentown, Pa."Stan

Hi there,I am happy for you, however not wanting to put water on your fire..Try the retail at KSEA or at KSFO OR EGLL and play with the sliders, you will soon see the FPS go into single digits, I Have a similar set up, and i am afriad its not good with FSX. Dont get me wrong its not your rig, its just how the sim is.Jason

LOL! Better do some reading and get your patchfiles and bookmarks ready. Juliana is one thing, and if you're getting 17fps there, wait till you get a load of SFO or SEA! LOL! Right now, there IS no 'super-rig' for FSX just varying levels of "adequate", "inadequate" and "What the heck were you thinking" rigs.

Is it really true that sparce for FSX is the same as very dense in FS9?

17 fps with that rig??????

NO.....17 was the number it was set at when I opened it. I just didn't change it to a higher number. I'm going to try differnt frames tonight. I'll let you know. Stan

The demo is an island surrounded by ocean...so it will have higher frame rates than most places. But BUT...you have a sweet computer setup there. You should use matt Fox's autogen file, and a few other things, and you will get 30 fps 90% of the time. It's that 10% of the time that we still have to work on.On my system, I lock at 30 fps, and FSX stays there, except at the detailed airports where it can drop to 12-15 fps. Still, 15 fps in FSX is equal to 25 fps in FS9. That's what the naysayers don't understand.RhettAMD 3700+ (@2.5 ghz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (94.47), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2 GB Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8, WD 250 gig 7200 rpm SATA2, CoolerMaster Praetorian

Hi Stan-Nothing about the rig, really... just a "hi" from a Muhlenberg Elementary graduate here... ;)Allentown is one weird city. I'm interested in seeing what happens to Queen City... does Pawlowski still want to shut it down? That's the first place I ever flew from in a small plane... Ok, ok - I'll keep it flight-sim related. Is Dorney Park in the sim? Heck, when I first went, its traffic control was one cop with a rotating stop/go sign :)I think a better model of the PP&L as well as the Muhlenberg College dome and maybe some other big buildings should be in there... Andrew

Andrew,I'll let you know about the Allentown landmarks when I get the Retail version tomorrow. It may take a while for me to tweak it and get used to it.Now....for the news. I went back to Juliana and upped the frame limiter to both Unlimited and down to 31. In both cases the frames went up and the flight was relatively smooth. Real Weather gave me a thunderstorm, however, with fantastic rain on the runway (these 7950's are awesome for the water and weather effects). I also upped the Autogen to Normal and all was still very stable. I'm thinking I like Sparse Autogen better, and I will take the advice of the developers and testers (and Microsoft) and keep my frame limiter to 30 or under. I'm also letting the Sim do the AA and AF. Seems I read somewhere on the forum that letting the sim do it was better than the card (but I will try it both ways).Yes...I know that even with this rig, that I'll have to do some tweaking, but I don't think it will be all that much. I did change my Texture Multi bandwidth number to 200 in the CFG rather than the 37 it had on default. Can't wait to get my hands on the real thing.

Demo is irrelevant. Put it at KSEA in the full version and start tweaking because you'll need to cut back here and there and everywhere.

That's the thing though, once you start turning things off to get a decent frame rate you end up with a $70 sim that looks marginally better than FS9 with 3rd party addons.

If you end up having autogen related framerate issues with the retail version, you could try this tip below that lets you customize the autogen density more precisely then the slider does.Start by putting the following two lines into the FSX.cfg file under the Terrain section:TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_TREES_PER_CELL=4500TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_BUILDINGS_PER_CELL=3000Then you can try changing the numbers. (Lower = not as dense, higher = more dense. The numbers can be anywhere from 10 to 6000.) It should work in the Demo versions as well. (I know in my copy of Demo 1 it works wonders.)Edit: 4500 and 3000 respectively are the default values."Let me help you out. You're cleared to taxi any way you can to any runway you see."
