Funny thing is that speech recognition is done by Microsoft and is a default Windows thing - it's built-in in Windows 10. So they won't have to do much to implement it. And it's so much better to have conversations with ATC.

There is a reason for that.

Running the speech engine inside the simulator process is asking for trouble. You're only one speech command away from busting your sim. More so on long haul flights.

This is why we run Multi Crew Experience (voice control for P3D , FSX and soon MSFS 2020) as an external process and not via a gauge inside the sim.

You can then have fun with speech reco, saying anything you want, without worrying about "upsetting the system". Worst case scenario, speech based app dies or speech engine becomes unresponsive and is restarted any time, But your flight, the most important thing will hardly, if ever, be compromised.

I always said if you want ATC, look at Vatsim, IVAO...

I think MSFS2020 if great, some scenery off but who cares.

For practice I think it will be great.  Now if you want the real thing go get a PPL.  I will be getting back into real flying again and using MSFS for some refreshing skills lost

Regarding ATC pronouncing waypoint names, go to translate.google.com , select "English" as the language, type in a few of the waypoint names, one per line, and click on the play button. Even bing translator can produce something similar.

Yes and sites like that and I assume Microsoft Desktop will miss local variances on proncations. JSTRM in Florida is locally pronounced Jetstream.

MY own personal opinion about MS/ASOBO using real world cameras is that they are developing a sim/game (not a virtual professional camera add-on) & are releasing alpha video clips.

Pity that you are not alpha testers (maybe you are) and you can use your own real world camera to take in-game shots. I'm sure that ASOBO will be happy to post them for you.

I am not asking Asobo or Microsoft to develop anything, just reacting to or understanding the mysterious feeling I had every time I look at some screenshots with this lense effect... This effect does not diminish by any mean the super quality of the graphic engine. And I am not an Alpha tester.

That is why I stated in this post that if we want professional ATC, only external programs able to do so. But Asobo should provide (maybe via simconnect)  full control for traffic for external software.

Same here, clouds I thought were the best part of the sim, but not so much anymore. Perhaps they have tweaked them because they are performance killers. They are sometimes a fuzzy mess. Hope it is just settings.

Maybe they reworked on the skies and clouds to improve performance as you say who knows... Yes maybe they don't look like the initial videos... Maybe sometimes they do, depending on the real world Metar, who knows...

But I am not sure I agree with the screenshots examples you show from the other simulator (I have too). They do not represent the simulator's out of the box / default skies and clouds as you know.... It's an addon...

For those who do not know, just to be fair, it's a commercial addon / plugin, that I have bought myself and I think it takes the other simulator's environment to another level. However, this addon plugin, at least here in Canada with the currency thing, costs as much as the price of the simulator itself.

Not mentioning that the plugin is still work in progress, with very limited layers and type of clouds, performance issues etc... Thus not refined yet.

So unfortunately the comparison is not very fair here.

Confirmed PFPX shows it SE of KLAS.

The etymology of waypoint names is an interesting topic of its own. There are several airway intersections in our local airspace that have been in existence for over 50 years. Those all spell out actual words: THINK, BEEPS, WOMAN, BIPOD etc. Newer ones are just collections of consonants and vowels: WUDUL, VILCU, XUCCO (I have heard the last one pronounced “Ex Zoo Ko” by ATC). I suppose there are only so many 5-letter combinations that have at least one vowel - I wonder if they will eventually run out?

For 50 years, the NDB/LOM on the ILS 32 approach at nearby KITH had the waypoint name VARNA, which is over a small village with that exact name.  Last year, the name was “stolen” by the FAA and reassigned to a waypoint in Puerto Rico near TJSJ, so the NDB is now named VRNAH

@JRBarrett, names change for a variety of reasons I suppose. UPGAS formerly south of Cardiff, Sth Wales is now in the North Sea. I suppose after Concorde ops ended it was not relevant.

Another waypoint south of EGCC with a SID named from it - CONGA - was probably named after the nearby town of Congleton. And MALBY (Wiltshire, England) is named after the nearby town of Malmesbury. 👍

As far as the appearance of clouds: Remember they're working far better than "the other sim". You have actual fluid motion of air and humidity with light scattering to boot. Even if at certain times it looks worse than the photoreal we currently have, it's what's behind the scenes that is what is really important to simulating flight. And FS2020 does that part far better than the other sim.

Take-offs are optional, landings are mandatory.
The only time you have too much fuel is when you're on fire.
To make a small fortune in aviation you must start with a large fortune.

There's nothing less important than the runway behind you and the altitude above you.
It's better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air, than in the air wishing you were on the ground.

I'm not sure what other sim that you are referring too as P3d4, P3d5, XP11 plus all the different weather add-ons use different approaches to their atmospherics. In my opinion, this feature set is not a big flaw in any existing flightsims. I personally don't believe that customers will switch to MSFS 2020 just because of the weather depiction.

Weather is a big reason I never purchased P3D or X-Plane those clouds never look real and always look like candy floss up close.

Probably why Hi-Fi sold so many licences for Active Sky which greatly enhances the default clouds. I’m very happy with how they look in P3D v4.5 even if they’re not volumetric.

This is just about the first time I have finally been able to look at clouds in a sim, and they are good enough that my brain finally just accepts them as clouds and goes about its business. In every other sim, for years the clouds have made me go "Hmmmmmmmmmmm....."

Most attempts at true 3D clouds to date have had enormous compromises as far as view distance, numbers of layers, cloud heights with things like cumulonimbus and nimbostratus, fog depiction, fps tradeoffs, shadowing and self shadowing... the list goes on.

Asobo/Ms shows for the first time (other than in games) what modern effects can look and behave like.

Perfect? Nope, just (like much of the sim) overall a big leap forwards.

We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically.

I'm referring to this:

Visually, ASN, P3DV5 and XP11 can look better with their photorealistic textures (at least in screenshots), but MS2020 has stuff behind the scenes that these applications do not; Moreover, with MS2020 you're not going to climb out of a fog layer and suddenly see the ground like you do with ASN, or have a 5 second update that throws brand new depictions at you like in XP11.

I disagree that MS2020's feature set for weather isn't both superior and a selling point. But that's just like my opinion, man.
