August 11, 20205 yr Moderator Too late to the party...again! ☹️ I live between Chock and EGCC and saw nothing but then again all curtains (drapes to our cousins 😁) were drawn. Still a decent chance of them for the next couple of days. Incidentally, my station recorded the highest dew point temp today in over 9 years. 23.2°C this afternoon. Sticky and we don’t have air cond! 😟 Ray (Cheshire, England). Lots of lightning flashes in quick succession, but I was too tired to get up and have a look! Likewise a bit further south from you,Christopher. Pelting showers too. Rick Almeida
August 11, 20205 yr I can see lots of flashing off to the southwest of where I am the Peak District tonight , the met office radar shows a big red cell over stoke heading north towards Chock and Ray’s neighbourhood ! It looks like I’m going to miss the rain again tonight my lawn is crying out for it though. Still it’s nice to be at home watching it in the distance rather than at 36,000ft over South Carolina trying to plot a way through it on the radar at night 787 captain. August 11, 20205 yr Author Like a sauna in the NW of England today. Shame I wasn't gliding today, it'll have been a Diamond Heights thermal day today for sure. Fully expect some thunder later on. Edited August 11, 20205 yr by Chock Alan Bradbury Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here
August 11, 20205 yr Moderator Sheet lightning to the south of me moving this way. My lawn could do with a good drenching too. Fingers crossed. Still got all the windows and patio open as it’s so sultry. 22°C as I write this. Ray (Cheshire, England). Still around 70F and now lightning every few seconds and it’s started to rain. We need Atlantic air to blow all this heat away. Ray (Cheshire, England). I have watched a few Time Team episodes on youtube. It always surprises me how the Time Team guys can dig all those holes all over England, and never break a sweat. Well, not a real SWEAT like you would digging a hole in the southern USA. 10 minutes of that and it would be a drencher. Now I know why. August 12, 20205 yr Moderator The Macclesfield area had several stations reported well over an inch (25mm) of rain in the early hours. Here in Cheadle Hulme, 8 miles away just 0.08". @Mace, the climate in the UK can best be described as mild. Rainfall varies enormously from the NW of Scotland (60+ inches per annum) to <20" in the SE of England. It's often cloudy but not excessively hot. Most heatwaves are caused by importing hot air from France. So outside temps are reasonable most of the year. @Ron Attwood, you'll see I worked it out myself in a later post. We call all of you Yanks wherever you come from. Yankee is not a term we use. I should test you on Scousers, Geordies and Brummies. 😉 Ray (Cheshire, England). August 12, 20205 yr After the met office rainfall maps predicted I’d miss the rain again a large and very active cell sat right over the Peak District last night at about 1am. Hopefully The rain will make my new grass seed germinate. I don’t know how accurate or scientific a measurement it is but one of the dogs bowls was left out on the patio and that’s got 1.25 inches of rainwater in it this morning. 787 captain. August 12, 20205 yr In East Lancashire last night we had a very quiet time of it .No rain nor lightening to be seen for miles around. We live on a hill! High temp and humid conditions is something that we are having to get used too Norman Bowman
August 12, 20205 yr Moderator @jon b, there are no private weather stations in your village but one in Castleton recorded 1.5” and several west of Sheffield recorded over 1”. Your lawn seed should appreciate the rain. This may help. https://www.wunderground.com/wundermap Ray (Cheshire, England).
