A Transcendant Moment

So it happened.  I just deleted X-Plane.

I wasn't going to, but I just had a moment flying over New Haven, CT.  I'm sure there are a few of you out there who worked a lot to create your own custom scenery in X-Plane.  I toiled for months to create as close a facsimile as I could of the city and surrounding countryside using custom orthos, a few hand built 3d models, and a lot of work with World2Xplane using a heavily modified config file a bunch of custom facade textures to do things like properly identify and portray Yale buildings, grocery stores, properly labeled big box stores (like Home Depot, Best Buy, Whole Foods), blah, blah.  It was nuts.  And my wife was quick to make fun of me as I would waste hours away in photoshop setting it all up.

I just did the same flight in MSFS from Tweed New Haven over the city that I would do as I was working on the X-Plane version to check out updates .... and it looked awesome.  Keep in mind I had poured over city photos and had updated Open Street Map files ad nauseam to get the proper building heights, etc.  I knew things pretty intimately... but this time it was all there but it exactly matched the photos instead of being the rough approximation I had created.

This thing rocks!

I'm more than happy to pass the time waiting for Asobo to finish the autopilot with experiences like that!

Don't think I'll be going back.

... I did, of course, back up X-Plane onto an 8TB external drive .. I'm not THAT crazy, 😉  especially after all that work.

I spent many hours over the years creating scenery for FSX, mostly just small niche projects for fun but this blows everything away. It's what I wish I had in FSX since release.  Every time I fire up this sim I get a new "WOW" moment. The terrain along with lighting and shadows on trees/buildings is just gorgeous. I can only imagine what its like to run it at high-ultra rather than Med-High like I am now. Maybe in a couple months when I build a new rig...

Yeh, I’m thinking the same. Two things will happen

1. I’ll end up with a lot of spare space on my maiin sim 1Tb SSD + 250Gb spare SSD

2. I’ll do a lot more flying! 😁

This is just the beginning which is amazing to think about. There will be updates that will add some great features I'm sure. We have not even yet seen the full potential of what is to come. I know a lot of addons that are coming in right now are ports with some updated technology and that's great! But when the SDK is completed and the developers can really stretch the limits, I think we will see some airports and aircraft of quality and depth we've never imagined.

I finally feel like I can be content with just one simulator. I have deleted X-Plane and P3D. Although DCS can stay, that's a whole different ballgame 😄

Is it done yet? When will it be released? Will it be freeware or payware? How much will it cost? Any updates on the progress? Will it work for Xbox? Can I be a beta tester? How's the performance in VR?

I completely agree. Everywhere I go the flights are smooth as silk even with my mid-range computer and the scenery is so immersive that it gives me butterflies. I am one happy customer and I'm sure that things will get even better as the time passes.

I'm only keeping X-Plane around to compare flight models since there's enough debate about it.

One thing I found being seldomly mentioned/appreciated is the quality of terrain mesh in MSFS. At least for mountains the mesh resolution must be out of the roof. They look so real and fine. Quite amazing.

Not for my experience. The mountains I know from real life I've flown in the sim have much lower definition than in P3D with freeware mesh.

Mesh quality it's actually the weakest aspect of the visual depiction IMO.

But. Texturing, trees and lighting in most cases makes up for it.

Also it might be due to my settings, high. Maybe the mesh resolution is better with some ultra setting

Same experience for me...been flying over very well known to myself terrain, and anchors upon it.  Most accurate. No intention of leaving the Dark Side either..time to move on...and I did.   I have lots of room, so have not deleted my extensive collection 3rP for P3D.  It's my back up sim, and can be happy to be that.  On my system, it's now called Grandpa...but..with respect...:)

a lot depends where you fly, i seen great mountains, but also not so great ones.

overall i am happy with the resolution of the mesh.

I read your post and then deleted 1.3TB of accumulated FS9, FSX, P3Dv2, P3Dv3, P3Dv4 freeware, utilities, addons, sceneries, liveries, aircraft models etc. from the last 16 years! Those were my backups!

like FS9 and FSX the hotfixes should be coming out over the next few months, and it'll make this sim even better!
