large download warning

it's only 10 days from release and we are already getting entire city photogrammetries from google

imagine what would happen in 100 days. we could have an automated software that converts google maps to msfs scenery

but i have the feeling this is not going to be tolerated by microsoft or google

Would they be running scared of the little streetwise dog with some smarts? Surely not?

Assuming that my interpretation is that some lone enthusiast is providing what the megacorps cannot with all their facilities. Or is it that MSFS uses Bing and not google? Is that why? Genuinely curious.

Well yeah. Microsoft is going to use Bing maps since it's no extra cost to them. If they were to use google, they would have to pay licensing fees.

It'll be interesting to see how they can "stop the signal" then... :cool:

I don't think they'll be able to completely stop it. My guess is any websites which have a business around hosting add-ons will probably stay away, in order to not get shutdown. But, the files will still be around the internet via various file hosting providers I'm sure. Not really possible to take anything down. And once it's on your computer, MS doesn't know where the add-on is from, so, that won't be blocked.

Edinburgh on the way this weekend / early next week (if C&D orders from Google don't kick-in beforehand).

Wonder if, when you turn up the details to ultra on the Glasgow scenery, it has all the drunken bums around the entrance to Glasgow Central? 🤣

I installed this scenery its amazing.

This is really excellent and an indication of what is possible. The transition from the augmented data to the original is not subtle (I would not like to be driving on the flyover!!). The big thing for me is that it really shows what can be done without paying mega money to the likes of Orbx. Thanks to the guy who put this together.

I'm missing something here, clearly (half a brain maybe? :tongue:)

The thing is, why shouldn't we, by we I mean the community and the purchasers of the sim, not strive to have the best scenery options available? For example FSX never delivered on proper detailed scenery so folks stepped in and provided that detail, some payware, some freeware. The new sim is closer than anything before it, but still lacking here and there (not discussing flight models!).

If Google aren't going to allow anyone to create free detailed scenery then who are they to say, "No you will not enjoy the sim of the enemy (MS) with free 3rd party mods.." Blackpool will NOT have a Tower.. Stonehenge will NOT be represented unless we say so..."

Better pull Google maps of the internet then, or make it impossible to generate scenery from it (I don't know how this stuff is created - never looked into it).

Afraid so. Without wanting to get into a lengthy legal debate - read the 'Fair use' and 'Prohibited Conduct' sections of Google's ToS. https://www.google.com/intl/en-GB/permissions/geoguidelines/

What is occuring now is probably going to be short-lived once Google is aware that it's copyrighted 3D models are being used in a competitor's product.

Anyway, I appreciate the work that these modders are doing to improve the default sim.
