Update: G1000 improved v2

Featured Replies

My biggest goal after the previous release of my G1000 mod, which was focused mostly on giving it software brightness control, was to release an update that did that without breaking the hardware knobs on planes that do have them, such as the C172.    I've done that and integrated some other feedback from the community into a follow-up release.  It's been in the hands of a few testers for a little while and it's time to set it free.

You may note that this version also ships under the name of Working Title G1000 -- I've decided to pool my efforts with those of a few like-minded people who enjoy fixing smaller planes and this is our first release.  There are more things in the works, including the CJ4 improvements that have had their own active thread on this forum.   That's still not quite ready for birth, but this is ready to go.

You can download the updated zip file right here on Github.  It you're curious ahead of time, here's a changelog for the current version and a full readme.  If you had my previous rcj-g1000 installed remove that before installing this one, as this fully supersedes that.  It will probably be a little bit longer until the next release, as I want to help with the CJ4 project and spend some time coordinating some updates with a couple other folks working on fixing the smaller planes in the game.   But with this version, everyone with a G1000 should now be able to enjoy a slightly more functional cockpit.

And stay tuned for more from Working Title!

Rob, thank you so much for this. I really appreciate this mod in making the G1000's a bit more realistic! 🙂

G1000 improved v2. This really needs to read "G1000 Lighting Improved". I keep thinking it improved its functionality Nav wise! Apologize for Bold. Trying to get rid of it.

Well, it started as a lighting fix, but now it's becoming a more general fix-set intended to try to bring the G1000 closer to real world functionality.  I would love to fix some of the nav issues, and we've been talking about how best to do that for a number of the stock planes, but a lot of that logic is just thin calls to stuff in the sim engine which is going to make improvements really challenging.  We've talked and continue to think about the best way to possibly introduce a functional OBS mode, for example, but...   a lot of those problems may not be fixable without resorting to third-party gauges.  I want to take care of as much as we can fix in the sim in the meantime.

I have a list about a dozen items long of things I know I *can* fix and want to get done soon.

Looking through the readme I would like forward a want-to-have.  Today I flew in FSX SE in a Milviz 310 Redux with RXP GNS gauges.  I was amazed at how easy it was to tune with the knobs.  The mouse wheel works in either direction based on pointer location, but you are able to tune with the mouse buttons, one click at a time.  So going from A to M for instance, is 11 quick clicks.  And if pointed at the upper right or upper left of either the inner or outer knob you can also hold down either the L or the R mouse button to quickly and continuously "click" to a chosen letter or number.  Any way you can accomplish that in this improvement?  A more prominent mouse pointer would also be a great addition.

I can't dig too deeply into it at the moment, but from what I recall of that portion of the code adjusting the size of the hit boxes should be doable.   Changing the mouse pointer, though, is almost certainly out of the scope of any given gauge.  But never say never.  😄

I'll make a note on my todo to look into that.    If you have a github account and want to add it to our issues board that would be great, but don't feel the need to sign up just for that.

Understand.  Humm.  How is this modification applied.  It is not in the readme.  Does it go in the Community folder?

Yep, just drop the workingtitle-g1000 directory from the zip file into your community folder.

Something else that would be nice is to have the G1000 hold onto the setting for frequency spacing that is on it;s setup screen.  It always defaults to 8.33 kHz. Would like to lock it in at 25 kHz  or default it to that.  Have now checked to see if that is a variable in the aircraft.cfg file.

Nice work! Thank you!
Would be nice to change the font for the G1000. I don't know why, but the G1000 looks a little "cartoony" to me.
And there are some people working on mods for airplanes with G1000, such as the G36 and the C208B. Would be nice if they don't interfere with each other.

Keep up the nice work. Do you have a donation link?

No donation link, I don't feel right taking money, especially when I'm working as part of a team now.  🙂  Thank you very much for the thought, though.   If you really want to give something, just donate a few bucks to a charity working for social justice, they need help much more than I personally do.

I've reached out to the the G36 creator about integrating our work, especially since we both overwrite panel.xml so there's a conflict there.  I wasn't aware of the 208 mod, so thanks for that one.  I'll check it out.   I'm also talking to some folks working on the DA40, and the person here with the 152 reaiism mod.   Even if we don't all unite under one project (while I'd like for at least *some* of us to), we can definitely open more consistent lines of communication for mutual benefit.

Thanks for the new release, keep up the good work 🙂

Great idea to team up so that there won't be conflicts in the mod, which can cause more problems and confusion. This is excellent!
