Update: G1000 improved v2

Definitive.. we are one month in and still trying to come to terms with the G1000... 😉

My question posted in the upcoming Q & A topic over at MSFS:

Approach procedures are not currently flown correctly in some aircraft. It requires activating a selected approach before the final enroute waypoint that precedes the IAF of the approach. If the approach is activated at a point past that final enroute waypoint the aircraft is turned back to that previous enroute waypoint and begins to fly the entire flight plan in reverse.

Email this morning, from kaosfere4829 Rob Jones 9/24:
We have a fix in the next version of the G1000 mod which will be releasing soon that should take care of that problem. Improved DTO handling is on the list but will probably not make this release.

This sounds like the "Community" is on it... great!  🙂

Happy that someone (Asobo are you listening..) is picking up the ball.

If Approaches and DTO can be handled correctly, 90% of my G1000 problems are solved.

I do not typically add and remove waypoints, but I know that others do..

If the GNS530 is fixed at the same time, I'll crack open a bottle of bubbly.. 🙂😄

Haha.  Yep, that was a fix that was made for the CJ4 that also got pulled into the G1000.   There won't be any more AP logic fixes before the next release -- which should be out Real Soon Now --  mostly because I want to take the time to assess its AP in full and figure out what the best way to fix more of it would be -- but hopefully there will be more coming in later versions.

Mine will still be limited by the meager nav database, particularly for approaches in IMC.  Not only approaches that are totally missing.  I have now found two where the approach IAF is missing.  OK for straight in and nearly straight in, but not for coupled approaches that require a turn at the FAF/glide scope capture point..

Also, hope the mod cures the unrealistic GS capture issue.

That one is separate, I believe.  The fact that ILS GS capture seems to work OK, but RNAV LPV GS indication and capture is totally off, leads me to suspect that the source Navdata is either incorrect, or being interpreted incorrectly..

Good point. I believe there is an ILS 24 approach into KBKF and failed to consider it.  I got too caught up trying to manually enter the IAF and then just hand flew to it and through the approach.  Ceiling was 800 ft so no problem.  All of that in the M20 with GNS.

My flight tomorrow from Cleveland to KMDW will be in the B55, and perhaps later mirrored in the G58, if you catch what I am saying....

So. forgive me for being dense (all my flying was done before GPS units.. yes I'm old), but although this improves overall the operation of the G1000,  does this now allow me to just set up an IFR route direct to an airport and then wait for an approach to be given by the arrival airport and then set and use that approach on arrival, or is that issue a more fundamental issue within MSFS and seperate from these changes?

One thing that does annoy me is having to setup an approach before the flight even departs.

Thank you, this is fantastic. Also, happy to see that the G3000 will receive some love as well.

I believe that you can indeed select and load an approach for your arrival airport in flight.

The problem is that the approach is not necessarily added to your flightplan in a seamless fashion, but instead can make you fly the most bizarre detours when you activate it.  All this is being looked into, and hopefully fixed (over time..)

Thanks Bert...

I can live with "over time" to quite a large extent..  to me its just annoying, not game breaking..  and in fact I will be waiting "over time" for quite a lot of improvements to fundamental atc such as real vectoring in to visuals etc  rather than just dumping you over the airport and leaving you to work it out from there 🙂

I agree, much is not working correctly at present, and I am quite impatient myself to see some of my "top five" items addressed and fixed.

What does work.. is flying with the AP turned off or in HDG mode.. that gets me quite far..

Also, following a preselected flightplan in NAV mode works, most of the time  🙂

"Most"  hehe   I am finding that when I am shooting an ILS...  (predefined in flight plan) that the ILS seems to only reach as far as the last waypoint rather than somewhat further which means that if you are a fraction above the height, you fail to pick it up...   what i have started doing is when atc bring you into the approach and then hand you off to tower before you turn to final,  I then drop a couple of hundred feet prior to contacting approach to ensure I am below the glideslope so I can actually shoot it and capture it 🙂

True and funny at the same time.

G improved v2. This really needs to read "G1000 Lighting Improved". I keep thinking it improved its functionality Nav wise! Apologize for Bold. Trying to get rid of it.

That needed to be said. The mod doesn't fix what's really wrong with the G1000.
