September 24, 20205 yr Author Thanks, Bert, I appreciate that. 🙂 Yes, these are iterative improvements, but I come from the "release early, release often" mindset of the open source world. Trust me, there's plenty more to come, there's just no reason to make people wait while we rebuild the G1000 from the ground up. And I think people are really going to enjoy the next version even if it doesn't magically turn the stock gauge into an RXP. As they say... you can't please all the people all the time.
September 24, 20205 yr Just now, Bert Pieke said: Not quite sure what you are saying here... We have some talented and dedicated community members who have just started to dig into the G1000 code, and are releasing mods as they get them developed and tested. They deserve encouragement and thanks! 🙂 Let me be more specific. The best advice that I've gotten recently regarding MSFS was right here on AVSim. The advice was to simplify the MSFS installation and get rid of as many mods as possible. The sim has enough built-in issues, that overlaying mods, no matter how useful is really a "buyer beware" situation. And since the mods are free, even if they have some benefit, the user of said mods then has no basis to complain about CTDs and bugs. I was only emphasizing what was said in the post that I quoted, that these mods encourage a large number of users to try them out. The G1000 has caused more trouble than any other part of the sim. Maybe you are experienced enough to know what to install and what not to. But when some inexperienced and frustrated G1000 user sees a thread title like "Update: G1000 improved v2", they are going to jump at the chance to fix the issue, even though the mod has nothing to do with addressing the stock G1000 bugs. I feel the same way about the A320neo mod. It has fixed a lot of issues, but I deleted it because I can't tell what is still broken in the default sim. Maybe a few months from now, things will be different.

I think I'm not alone when I say I'm anxiously awaiting the fixes for entering approaches which force you to turn around and go back to a previous waypoint. That can't come out soon enough.

September 29, 20205 yr Author We are getting very close to release now. If the update expected tomorrow doesn't break anything notable it should be within the next few days. Until then, here's a final little teaser that shows off a few of the features that I'm most excited about. This is a test run of some code that I finished tonight which adds a flashing yellow text format option to the engine gauges to go along with the flashing red one -- this was requested by some folks working on improvements to the DA40NG. Look more closely, and you'll also see that this is on an entirely new engine page. The new version of the mod adds support for an unlimited number of engine pages which can each be custom configured and added to the soft key menu at the bottom. We have gone the extra mile to allow this to be done without modifying any of the stock files -- these new panels can be configured entirely in an additional XML file which will make it easy to add these enhancements to even commercial planes and other mods. This particular version is for a G36 Bonanza; to be more specific, it is the development version of the TheFrett's community G36 mod. If you look closely, you'll see that the number 1 and 2 bus voltages differ from each other and vary independently. This is a feature that's been added in the G36 mod and which is fully supported by our G1000 due to the flexibility of the custom configuration system. In fact, we've been collaborating with TheFrett, and the next version of the G36 is going to be built with our G1000 in mind and will work with it flawlessly out of the box. As I noted, I've also been talking with some other plane modders to help get their mods configured to support this, too. If you're working on a plane-specific enhancement and want a head start on getting it compatible with the next G1000 release, drop me a line, we can help you out. (The particular caution and alert thresholds in this video are not authentic, I put them in arbitrary points for testing purposes. Also, if you look closely, you'll notice something else on the MFD that everyone's been excited about, although the coming presence of this feature is no great secret. 🙂 ) That's all for now. Like I said, hopefully this will be in your hands within a few days! Edited September 29, 20205 yr by kaosfere
September 29, 20205 yr To each his or her own, but I'm excited to fly with track up and the ability to activate an approach. But certainly others are welcome to stick to the default for a few months if that's what they prefer. 👍 5800X3D | Radeon RX 6900XT
September 29, 20205 yr Flew the "pre release" G1000 tonight in the 208 and so far, so good I think. I primarily flew to see how the approaches now worked, and I can report they worked 100% I was given an IFR approach and deliberately waited to enter it and it activated and flew with none of the previous issues. Awesome! One thing however. I noticed the "weather" page was missing. I have no idea what a real G1000 has, but I really could've used that page in this flight in IFR conditions with it's vertical and horizontal nexrad radar. Was this moved to a different page, or removed, or something I didn't see and just flat out missed? I did fly the modded 208C I found so I realize that might have caused issues as well. Any idea?

The work on the A320, C152, G1000 and a few others is pretty darn impressive. A significant improvement over the standard fare. They break nothing and fix plenty. I am with you on having to install 20 add-ons to make the sim work and look nice but these mods are not intrusive at all. They sit in a folder totally "outside" of the sim (the Community folder) that do not require a exe installer that dumps files and registry entries all over the place. It's just drag and drop. Better still, if you don't like it, delete or cut the mod out of the Community folder and it's like it was never there - no trace at all. Not one of Asobo's files are affected with these mods. Only thing that might be wise is whenever Asobo drops a new patch, cut mods out of your Community folder until it can be established from the dev's that they continue to work as intended in the new build. Those early adopters of REX and other core addons on the other hand, in a sim still under heavy development where weather is likely to be worked on in several future patches, may have more "fun".... but these little mods are brilliant! September 29, 20205 yr Just want to chime in and say thank you very much for all your effort and investment in this. I fly the 208B and am slowly mastering the G1000 and look forward to taking full advantage of your enhancements.

It doesn't matter, the stock A320 will never be fixed or improved to a point that surpasses the mod. That's the beauty of it, you can treat stock planes for what they are: basic placeholders. It's always been like that. See what was accomplished by the flybywire in a month and compare to what Asobo has done in the same time frame, they actually broke the A320 to a point that it's now useless. I'm glad the modding community is stronger than ever with MSFS, we are definitely going to need them.

If you rotate the inner knob while the main screen is on the map, the radar will replace it if the plane is equipped with it, which the 208 seems to be. It was hard to find documentation on the specifics of real-world G1000s with onboard radar systems, but as far as I could tell that seemed to be the place is "should" go, and definitely not on the softkeys. I'm open to correction there, though, if that's wrong.

The only issue with mod installed in the community folder is a slow down in start up loading time. This only seems to be an issue with tons of terrain ad-ons though, the FM and avionics mods which are pretty much text files and nothing else doesnt seem to slow it down to a noticeable degree.
