Performance enhancement with overclocking

Featured Replies

At the weekend I decided to see what could be achieved if I overclocked my CPU. As I was only getting 3-5fps at large airports I thought it was worth a go since I've carried out every other tweak that has been recommended. My AMD 64 is rated at 2GHz and with the help of someone I know in the business he managed to get this up to 5.1GHz. He also overclocked my memory to the maximum.I then launched FSX and all I can say is what an amazing leap in performance. The 3-5fps jumped to 15-20fps with no stuttering whatsoever. I took a quick flight and it was absolutely incredible, so smooth and with masses of AI in the skies around. And that was with full autogen and all sliders to the right! Just as I landed severe wind shear casued me to nosedive. Luckily I managed to recover, but then FSX crashed to desktop and there was a loud bang. The fire is now out and I'm saving for a new computer and hoping to be re-housed within a few days.

HAHA! Thats why you should always enable thermal throttling in bios and test in increments of 50 MHz. Its incredible that you reached upto 5 GHz,thats an impossible number. Also, a good early warning system is the joystick rattle akin to stick shaking before a real life stall. Always heed that and quit FSX and clock down!

I find 5.1Ghz very hard to believe....I can believe that the PC went 'bang' within minutes of this event though!!

Unfortunately, that often happens with a 5.1Ghz overclock. If you hadn't been greedy and just held the OC to 4.9 Ghz I think you'd have been OK. Doug

Very funny! 2GHz to 5.1Ghz! And then 3-5 FPS jumps to 15-20 with "full autogen and all sliders to the right! and "masses of AI"!Love the humor! :D :-xxrotflmao

There was a post prior about making sure that any 5.1Ghz overclock is only attempted with a 3rd party undulating flange plate installed.First page of the 5.1Ghz Overclock Guide for FSX states (and I quote):"Armature assemblies generally installed for a 5.1Ghz overclock, including a mounting plate and a generally rectangular armature are fastened to the undulating flange plate to attain 15 FPS in FSX with all sliders too the right, thus allowing a Frame Rate increase from 3 FPS to 15 FPS...."Next time RTFM. Newbie!

Imagine the possibilties: to be able to fly and cook your dinner at the same time on a single device.Greg

Hi Just think what you and your friend could a do with an FX-57RegardsRex:-violin

5.1Ghz from 2.0G is technically possible for a couple of process cycles before it went Poof!.:)Manny

I think you probably mean overclocked from 2 GHZ to 2.5 GHZ.Bill

5.1 Ghz absolutely possible! Obviously you have not been paying attention, all that is needed is:1x Undulating Flange Plate.1x Upper Double Frammis.I just picked mine up from www.flange-n-frammis-r-us.com and will be overclocking mine to 5.1Ghz this evening.

Only 5.1ghz. Never mind, better luck next time!
