POSSIBLE MALEWARE in FREEWARE ADDON ?

Featured Replies

I was uninstalling some stuff through Control Panel in WIN 10 and came across something called  GPEDT.MSC  with the publisher named RICHARD.

There isnt much info on the internet except that it is most likely maleware masquerading as a legit  windows group policy editor.

I am not one to just randomly down load stuff off the internet and I do run AV and firewall but it seems to have missed this as several post on the internet state that even malwarebytes does not detect it.

So I am thinking that a freeware add on that I approached the DL of most likely is the culprit.  I wont say which ones I have installed because I dont know for 100 percent that those are the reason.. But I suggest maybe some or all of you that have installed any freeware for MSFS look in your control panel>uninstall and see if that files shows up.  And if it does maybe post a reply..

Yah I came accross that also... its weird there isnt more info about it.

just wondering if some other freeware addon downloaders are showing the same .

If your saying it cant be related because its older issue than msfs  I wonder if alot of the freeware addons espcially the ones that came out initially are just modified from older versions of fsx or whatever and its contained in those files.. Maybe its harmless I have no idea.. I have never had my AV detect anyhting weird going on,

What does this have to do with MSFS 2020?  I seem to be missing something.

because if others here that dl free ware add ons it would help identify the source of the file..or it could..  i thougth that was explained..

Thanks, keyboard cat. Since you are careful downloader and have recently acquired MSFS stuff that is new , then it probably did come from a MSFS addon. Suspicious that someone deliberately created a file named GPEDT.MSC. Seems like a filename designed to deceive.

Its not that it was posted.  My comment had to do with where it was posted among the forums here. Please point out the connection to MSFS or MSFS addons.  That's all.

well maybe you should report it to a moderator since it bothers you so much,

In order for something to be 'installed' such that it shows up in the Control Panel, you have to have run a .exe installer that did the 'installing'.

MSFS mods are simple .zip folders that get dropped into the community folder. There is no executable portion, and nothing that does any installing of items.

I find it highly unlikely that this came from anything related to MSFS, and the title of the thread is frankly misleading because you have no idea where it actually came from.

Over reaction. Only looking for the relevance.

UMMM.  I believe this started elsewhere.  Apologize if I am wrong but my first response was in reaction to that I saw it in MSFS 2020.  Again, if mistaken I apologize.

Oh, I now see that moderator did move this to Hangar Chat.  Thank you.
