fs2020 15 2 & 172 too unstable to fly

Featured Replies

FS2020 just installed on Windows 10, I7, 3770, 8GB, 1650S Video, CH yoke and pedals.  Both the 152 and 172 bounce so bad that it is impossible to control or do anything on the dash. Holding the yoke constant the vertical speed will go from 2,000 fpm down to 2,000 f/m up. Finally got the 172 on autopilot and it could not control the altitude. I finally hit escape just before diving into the ground. This is the 2nd install (1st time on different identical machine) and the first install did the same thing.

I flew the TBM and it seemed to be smoother. I got it to elevation and it leveled out and seemed stable. That was the only flight with it.

I am a SEL PP with about 900 hours on FSX-SE, mostly in the 172 or 182T.

Check that you are not using the Legacy model. You need to use Modern.

Does sound like legacy flight mode.

Either that or some sort of weird cross control issues maybe between yoke and trim.

The C152 andC172 are two of the better aircraft in the sim for stability; the C152 is actually used in the flight lessons.

So as others have said, you could be on the legacy flight model instead of modern, or a controller issue.

Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind).

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

Also you have pretty much bare minimum ram and graphics so where are you flying and with what settings ?

I would make one unrelated comment. Do not calibrate the CH pedals in Windows it totally messes up the brake axis in FS2020.  If you have already done a win10 calibration go back in and hit reset.

Yup, as others have said, this is not a sim problem, something is amiss with settings or controllers. Even with no mods, the C152 and C172 are two of the best behaved and nice to fly aircraft in the sim.

Even at minimum sensitivity levels, I am using less than 10% of my joysticks range of movement.  I can just manage a landing in nil wind, but even a puff or a gust throws the plane out of control.  Elevator axis is far worse than the aileron axis.  I know what C152s and 172s feel like as I trained on them in the RW.  It does seem strange that so many are still having issues at this stage of development.  In fsx I used the stick_sensitivity=0 line in the cfg and the stick worked perfectly for years.

I hate to imagine what the more twitchy aircraft are going to feel like when I get onto them.

Want to thank everyone for the responses. And want to say a belated HI.....

I just checked and it is in Modern mode. Took a little time to figure out where that setting was. I haven't calibrated anything. Maybe that is the problem. The problem does seem to get worse the longer it is flown, which is a total of about 5 minutes maximum so far because you can't control the plane, even on autopilot.

I checked and the 1650S graphics card is supposed to be equivalent to the recommended GTX 970 or RX 590.  I can swapped some memory between a couple machines to bump up the ram temporarily. But it would seem that 8gb would be enough for just a short (20 min) general aviation 172 flight.

I will look for resets to default and try that.

Thanks Again

That is gotta be something with setup. Make sure you flight model is set to modern and flight control bing to axises. Both airplane fly very close to real life on my side

test with the graphics set to low just to eliminate system performance. If you still have an issue even on low it is most likely not your system specs that are the issue.

I have an Intel I5 non OC and an Nvidia 1050 Vid card. (Not much at all),

I am using an old Microsoft FF 2 joystick. My sim also suffers from instability, especially in elevator

pitch. Reading the other notes I decided to derate the graphic settings.

30 fps, Render scaling 80, LOD 50, etc., Whatever  could be done without, shadows , etc was either

set low or turned off. This did SEEM  to improve aircraft stability. I also have a new 5 GIG OC intel and a

3080 graphics monster + a Warthog setup which I have not fiddled with yet as FS2020 is still undergoing

many changes. I also prefer to fly heavy freight STOL aircraft so I will have a long wait for any of them.

As sd_flyer said reduce 'sensitivity' to -50%

Also cut off the ends of the curve (this is 'effectiveness' and is what the slider in FSX did): Extremity Dead Zone.

I'm talking all 3 axis: rudder, aileron, and elevator.

You've received a number of good suggestions. However, the fact that you're using the FF2 jumped out at me. That's a wonderful stick and I was still using it when I installed this sim (back in Sept.).  However, it was uncontrollable with that stick - I experienced the same thing as you (could barely move the stick without severe over-control).  In desperation. I plugged in a spare basic modern stick I had and the sim became instantly controllable.  In fact, once I calibrated (in sim) it was smooth as silk, especially with the 152 & 172.

There have been a number of patches and updates since, so it's possible that the issues with the FF2 were resolved.  However, if you cannot get the stick to respond properly with new Sensitivity settings, the main culprit is the FF2 (apparent compatibility issues).

My MS FFBB2 works fine.

I eventually downloaded XPForce to get the forces working which made a massive difference (with force turned up I leave sensitivity at zero)  but even by default it was working OK.

I basically calibrated it in Win10 and that was it.

Are you guys using any fancy controller software that may be interfering.
