Bear strike at Yakutak

Featured Replies

Sue, you got a like for posting this unusual occurrence, not for the fate poor bear.. 🍻 Could have been worse for the jet and its occupants too - brown bears are quite large (average weight up to half a ton according to the internet).

Why would they not have a fence around the airport perimeter to prevent animals as big as bears from crossing the runway. I am glad that no one onboard was injured but I feel very sorry for the bear(s?). It something that should not have happened with the right planning and infrastructure in place.

Yakutat reportedly receives an average 143 inches of snowfall annually. I'm guessing that may, perhaps, factor into a practical fencing solution for that location. (...and yes, I do know bears hibernate in the winter!)

🙂

I’m guessing that any practical fencing solution would be fairly ineffective against a half ton bear.

The airport chart does warn of birds, moose and bears in the vicinity of the airport.

If there was some sort of radio emitter or something like that to repel them, then every hardware and sporting goods shop in Alaska would sell a portable version.

The charts do mention wildlife management (specifically that is is active only when the airport is open) so it would seem they do acknowledge and attempt to manage the risk, but nothing is foolproof...especially within nature.

I'm reminded of a TV programme featuring an alligator guy in Florida. He got a call from a lady who wailed "There's an alligator in my yard!" "No ma'am" he said, "You're in HIS yard"
