photogrammetry? ON or Off?

Featured Replies

I realized last week my photogrammetry in Data was off. I thought I was losing out and turned it on. To be honest I had clue what it was. Today I just used the drone and flew around KORF Norfolk I bought and noticed the buildings, ships and trees were Ugh close by so I turned it off and I got normal trees and buildings and it looks better

What is your preference and why?

What is the FPS impact using photogrammetry?

Anything else I need to know?

thanks

Don't you mean the top one is with and the bottom is without?

it all depends where you fly, try the italian cities , they look fab with it on.

I have had Photogrammetry off for a while now although I do turn it on occasionally.  I just don't like the melted buildings and spires due to the ongoing LOD issue.  PG turned off looks cleaner and I don't have the strange anomalies and awful looking trees.  I also have less stutters with it turned off.  The downside is that cities don't look all that realistic since you get generic buildings and they also have a pretty restricted LOD radius so sometimes you cannot see a city that might only be 5 miles away and they can suddenly pop into view.

Now this I will agree with...Florence and Rome are awesome.  I think maybe due to the fact the buildings in these cities are not tall so you don't get the spire effect...or at least it is not as obvious.

I've found that for my type of flying, off (at least for the time being) is the way to go. I flying IFR in the 320 in the US and there are far too many faults with it on and I got sick of it.  I think down the road there can be some really cool potential, but for my flying experience having it off has been more of a pleasure so far.  Cities like Chicago, NY and San Fran for me when I had it on looked so weird to me.  The only times they looked good was if you were looking directly down.  I didn't like that.

I use both methods depending on where I fly.  Like you say, phogogrammetry off can give you a few extra FPS if you are struggling, and a lot of areas don't have proper photogrammetry data anyway to enable the sim to generate the desired quality.

Without photogrammetry, it is just like the old FSX or P3D autogen, except it does a remarkably good job of lining things up, and doesn't look too bad at all!

Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind).

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

Intel 14900K in a Z790 motherboard with water cooling, RTX 4080, 32 GB 6000 CL30 DDR5 RAM, W11 and MSFS on Samsung 980 Pro NVME SSD's.  Core Isolation Off, Game Mode Off.

The biggest improvement with photogrammetry on and good downloads is in full 3D cities you are familiar with - as the buildings are super realistic and you can see things like the real world Walmart signs on the buildings. Bridges look like the actual bridge (though you cannot fly under them) and freeway overpasses look like the actual freeway.

Downside - there is an FPS hit and if downloads are bad (either end) things look ugly and melted.

With  photogrammetry OFF the roof of the building in a 3D city is correct in size and color but the actual building itself is not it is autogen, It may even be multi-storey instead of single storey or maybe a large garden shed will appear in game as a little cottage. bridges are generic flat plates and freeway overpasses are generic little hump shapes.

Note that not very many cities are 3D outside the US and parts of Europe.  here in Australia the 3D locations are random small cities like Wollongong, the Gold Coast and Newcastle. none of the major cities are 3D.

When Photo-G is OFF you'll lose all city buildings right?

In 3D cities they should be replaced by generic autogen buildings with the correct size and roofing but random height and style.  If you get no buildings at all something is wrong.
