Community folder

Featured Replies

I have looked for info on the issue I’m having but can’t seem to figure it out. I have found the folder according to the developers path  in my copy of the sim. It has a few entries of orbix scenery’s. I put the folder that contains the G1000 mod in the community folder but has no effect on the G1000 in the  DA62. Would someone please guide me thru this.

Thank you,

David

This tripped me up at first and may be your issue.  A lot of addons that go into the community folder will come with an extra folder.  For example, I downloaded the working title G1000 mod as a zip file and extracted it.  That created a folder called "workingtitle-g1000-v0.3.4".  Inside that folder was another folder called "workingtitle-g1000".  If I dropped the "workingtitle-g1000-v0.3.4" (the top level folder) into the Community folder, the mod did not work.  I had to put just the "workingtitle-g1000" folder into the Community folder instead.

MSFS scans the Community folder looking for the layout.json and manifest.json files, but it only scans one level deep.  You can't nest those files in a folder inside another folder.

So the path to the working title G1000 mod's json files needs to be
...LocalCache\Packages\Community\workingtitle-g1000

and not
...LocalCache\Packages\Community\workingtitle-g1000-v0.3.4\workingtitle-g1000  (the version number may be different)

See if that's the issue.

(This is true for any mod in the community folder.)

Get and install the Addons Linker utility.  It will allow you to place your mods wherever you wish and activate and deactivate them at will, one-by-one.  It does so by placing Windows shortcuts to the mods into the Community folder. It will also allow you to recognize the appropriate path to activate for each mod.  It is a valuable, if not invaluable utility.

Check your folder structure to see if it's correctly set (your folder should contain the "SimObjects" sub-folder in the same level as the other two, and the layout.json and manifest.json files together with other three files corresponding to the mod). Also, on the mod folder name check the spelling or make sure you don't have blank spaces in it.

It should work without the need of any extra software.

Agree with your comment.  However the suggestion was not just to get it to work, it was to add convenience and ease of management for him.  With the app I mentioned he can see which folder is appropriate to point to no matter how it is nested.

I can see your point. However, when someone has trouble with an add-on, better is to make it work without adding any extra step that can easily complicate matters.

I also think a nested folder is most likely to be the cause. However - I agree with @fppilot's suggestion: the Addons Linker will actually show you the problematic addons - and you can easily see which ones appear to be nested.

Other than than, it's a superb tool in its own right - and the earlier you use it, the easier it is to manage your addons, as moving legacy addons (once installed) from the Community folder can be troublesome.

I've yet to install any add-ons outside of the default. I own the Premium Deluxe version. When I installed the sim I installed it as such...

Double clicking on it and I have (2) folders...

I also have found only one Community Folder when I scan the entire drive for "Community".  It has the two Orbx airports I purchased in it.  I don't see anything about manifest.json and layout.json in it either, it's just those two airports.  Is there more than one Community folder?

If you open one of the airport folders.... what do you find?

This appears to have caused confusion ... I think you mean "for an add-on to work under the Community folder, it needs to contain manifest.json and layout.json to work".

To clarify even further... "For an add-on to work under the Community folder, the sub-folder that the add-on is contained in needs to contain manifest.json and layout.json to work".

And I'll also add that the Community folder itself should only contain sub-folders, one sub-folder for each add-on, nothing else.
