May 27, 20215 yr Its like they really want to see how you handle tailwind departures. The wind direction in the gps is accurate with the wind sock on the ground. When will this be fixed?
May 27, 20215 yr I see it often as well and have reported it more times than I can count. October 10, 20214 yr I think I've seen the same runway being used (ATC assignment or AI) at airport "x" (any airport) no matter what the wind direction is, since like SU3. This is broken, anyone see when this might be addressed? Edited October 10, 20214 yr by KERNEL32

Yes but the AI (when it actually "semi-works", always use the same runway no matter what the winds are. That is stupid. Edited October 10, 20214 yr by KERNEL32

I would say that the assigned departure runway is an incorrect match for surface winds about 99% of the time and is usually the exact opposite of what you should be using. I guess down the road I may try PF3. The default ATC usually has no option to even request a different runway so I simply ignore them and select the appropriate runway. I've also turned off all traffic and don't use multiplayer because of this. What gets me the most frustrated is to successfully change the approach due to a change in winds, only to be told I'm approved for the new approach but to still be instructed to circle around and land on the wrong runway (which I'm not going to do with a 25-knot tailwind). It's really crazy to provide a means to request a new approach and not have the option to also use the runway for that approach. Again, I ignore the circling instruction and land. At this point ATC screams that I didn't have permission to land (and continues yelling at me until I finally reach an exit). Randall Rocke

October 10, 20214 yr The thing with this issue is that it often seems like the sim ATC is purposely picking the opposite runway than it should. I get that when winds are light or calm various airports have various preferred runway configurations that can be complex and even vary by time of day and it would be expecting a lot for default ATC to get that right all the time without some sort of strong configuration file for each airport (which would be great BTW if end users could edit these). However when you are being told to land with a 20 knot tail wind (often flying head on into live traffic which are of course landing into the wind) there’s something basic broken in the runway assignment logic. October 10, 20214 yr I get the feeling the Alpha Dev Team assumed planes landed with the wind and programmed ATC accordingly, and it has never been fixed. Take-offs are optional, landings are mandatory. The only time you have too much fuel is when you're on fire. To make a small fortune in aviation you must start with a large fortune. There's nothing less important than the runway behind you and the altitude above you. It's better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air, than in the air wishing you were on the ground.
