Milviz Weather Radar

Featured Replies

Has anyone seen info or have experience wrt the compatibility of the Milviz WX Radar and P3Dv5.2?  It seems sometimes the WX radar is causing a CTD in P3Dv5.2, but other times it is not. I have not been able to find a statement by Milviz on whether or not they are working on an update of the WX radar for P3Dv5.2. The Milviz web site simply cites compatibility with P3Dv5, but I don't know if this statement has been updated to include P3Dv5.2.

Thx,

Al

I asked about it in their forums a little over a week ago, and all I got from them was something to the effect of "nothing changed when we went from 5.0 to 5.1, so we'll have to see if 5.2 changed anything..."

OK, thanks Bob.

To avoid CTD I removed the WX lines in the Panel.cfg of each relevant plane.

For example

//Window05 = WX Advantage Radar

//gauge00 = MV_WX!WX2D,0,0,419,381,1
//gauge01 = MV_WX!WX,64,121,291,205,1

//gauge00=MV_WX!WX,  0,0,512,361

Or in the P3Dv5.2 gauges folder you can simply remove or rename the MV_WX.dll file to disable it. An updated Milviz radar will simply replace that dll file. This way you don't have to edit the Panel.cfg file for every a/c that uses the WX radar.

I came to the conclusion that their weather radar gauge is definitely not compatible with 5.2 after loading the Xtreme Prototypes Lear 25 for a flight. Wx conditions were cloudy but dry at LFRS (Nantes, France) this morning and I got as far as pushing back for a flight to Madrid.

But then the GSX menu locked up on me and the sim CTD. Despite repeated attempts to load P3D with that aircraft all failed with a CTD and no mention in Event Viewer.

I cleared the shaders folder and tried again. Same problem. I then uninstalled and reinstalled the Lear opting for the Milvix Wx Radar but no GTN/GTX install. Still the problem persisted.

Finally, I decided the only non-standard thing was the wx radar. I edited the panel.cfg and commented out all reference to the wx radar. It now loads fine and I'm enroute to Madrid.

Hopefully Milviz will issue a fix asap.

Milviz have just reported on their forum they don’t think they can make their weather radar compatible with 5.2. Given it worked with 5.1 I’m struggling to work out what has changed so radically it’s broken the radar code.

This is the kind of s*** that makes me VERY frustrated with P3D and 3rd party developers. First Flight1 abandons its product now these guys are starting to word not allowed me off. 😞 This is a MINOR VERSION update, not 6.0! At the very least, they should update their stuff to make it work within the major versions.

That’s the strange thing though. They did make it compatible with 5.1 but for unknown reasons the point update by LM has broken something.

Ive asked if they’ve contacted LM for help. It can’t be that different surely. Maybe the hotfix for 5.2 will restore things.

I'm afraid they've all but abandoned their P3D products, no updates for v5 etc.  I should imagine sadly that this really means "there's no monetary advantage in making this compatible."

Well, I have a feeling they have their hands full with MSFS. Their Corsair update has slipped by about a month and a half already since the originally promised date. I am not really into military aircraft all THAT much, but I own both KA350i and P180 and this kinda thing just upsets me. I run both P3D and MSFS and will still gladly purchase P3D aircraft... AT LEAST until it's available in MSFS. If they made their civilian aircraft available in P3D 5.2 RIGHT NOW, I'd buy it. EVEN if they are developing it for MSFS. Cause the reason I have P3D in the first place is I didn't want to wait for great aircraft to be available in MSFS because I have an opportunity to enjoy it NOW on P3D. It's the reason I keep P3D! So why abandon a platform?

If Milviz can't, or decides not to, make the wx radar compatible with P3Dv5.2, it is going to hurt the sales of 3 party P3D developers who have the wx radar integrated into the panels of their aircraft.

And the question will come up, can you role back to P3Dv5.1 from P3Dv5.2?

I can if it comes to it. But I’d rather not and cannot believe a point release of P3D has broken something terminally.

You honestly can't blame the 3rd party developers though, I've spoken with Collin (programmer at TFDi) and he's also said that it's quite frustrating to develop with P3D as it's SDK documentation is about as useful as blinker fluid, and most of the high-end developers have been developing since FS2002 ~ FSX. You pretty much need to be a seasoned veteran to even delve into this platform. If only we had as good as a documentation as X-Plane's SDK....

Milviz didn't really go into detail about what has changed all they said was that the "API for the WX" has changed, not all that surprising since most api messages from P3D have been changed like the menu bar and information text. MSFS is pretty hot on the table, JustFlight is another small development group that's been working on tons of P3D products (A300B4, 747, Fokker F28, etc) but had been inundated with programming issues and porting their products to MSFS.

I may be wrong but I was under the impression Microsoft/Asobo had denied 3rd party developers access to the weather in MSFS. Maybe that has changed but if it hasn’t I fail to understand how a weather radar could be developed for it.
