Milviz Weather Radar

If Milviz can't, or decides not to, make the wx radar compatible with P3Dv5.2, it is going to hurt the sales of 3 party P3D developers who have the wx radar integrated into the panels of their aircraft.

And the question will come up, can you role back to P3Dv5.1 from P3Dv5.2?

Can't lives on Won't Street.

Previous v5.1 users can roll back, provided they kept their v5.1 installers.  You can still get the client installers from LM for the v5.1 HF1 and 5.0 HF2 packages, but they don't continue to distribute the full installers or the separate content and scenery modules for older versions.  So anyone who comes into the hobby anew or otherwise moves to P3Dv5 going forward will only be able to obtain P3D versions that are no longer compatible with the Milviz radar.  So if I were a third-party dev with an acft that integrates the Milviz radar, I'd be looking into integrating ActiveSky's radar.  PMDG, FSLabs, Majestic and Leonardo all support the ActiveSky weather radar either natively or as an alternative to the Milviz one.

I don't see myself ceasing all future P3D upgrades just for one radar gauge, so I will probably just continue to use my Milviz/REX radar-equipped acft (FSW Lear and Falcon, Milviz KA-350i and Turbo-Otter, and a few other GA planes) in the final-stable version of P3Dv4, and go forward in 5.x with those acft that don't need it.  I was about to pull the trigger on the Milviz Avanti P180, but since that's a v5-only acft that uses the Milviz weather radar, it appears all too likely it has already become crippleware only a few months after its release.  Probably best to take a pass on that one for the time being.

I am not familiar with the Active Sky WX radar. Is this something that has to be integrated into an a/c MFD or a GTN750's WX display?

That's why I am upset. I bought the KingAir in January of this year and the P-180 when it released. So, essentially, I got 6 months use out of it and they won't bother to make it work with the CURRENT version of the platform they released it for? I am NOT gonna roll back to 5.1 - its performance is VASTLY inferior to 5.2... I'd rather delete P3D altogether than roll back to the previous version. It's not what I want - I want developers to stand behind their products and the P3D platform. But I get it, MSFS is where the money is now... and I have MSFS, it's great and all... but what about the P3D customers?

I may be wrong but I was under the impression Microsoft/Asobo had denied 3rd party developers access to the weather in MSFS. Maybe that has changed but if it hasn’t I fail to understand how a weather radar could be developed for it.

That's right, they won't allow access to CHANGE it. But they can access it as it exists - for example, Carenado's Seneca V includes a functional weather radar. MSFS' default aircraft includes it too, and so do the default avionics packages and the 3rd party GTN750.

Read-only then. Yes, that would allow a radar to work. I would suggest all owners of Milviz products complain on their forum. Maybe the sheer weight of complaints will focus their minds. It’s not just the wx radar that’s affected but their aircraft that use it. And their reputation too.

I have three Milviz products, two aircraft not compatible with V5 and the radar gauge no longer working in V5.2. I am moving on with P3D as my sim of choice, if Milviz won't support P3D updates then I can no longer support their business.

THAT is my thing... Like I said I bought 2 of their P3D aircraft and one MSFS aircraft since January. I would have bought MORE P3D aircraft if they had v5 installers for them. But this recent issue with not only the lack of v5 compatibility for their other aircraft but now a possibility that their two v5 aircraft will no longer be fully functional?

I wonder if they are short-sighted enough to not understand that as a BOTH P3D and MSFS user, the way they treat their P3D customers affect my general feeling towards MilViz and may just affect my decision to support them (not not) in all their upcoming MSFS products. If they abandon support of two products I own not even 6 months after I purchased them, that does not particularly make me want to jump and buy all their MSFS stuff as I have previously intended. Just based on principle. And I guarantee you, I am not the only one in this situation.

@BostonJeremy77, your post would carry far more weight on the Milviz forum.

Yep your are correct. I have my list of developers that I will never again spend money with. It is called "Never, Never, Never Again!! Nope, Not going to happen". I don't need a list of who would get my money. It only have 2 or 3 names one it. Been doing flight sims for a long time. LOL I started with an etch-a-sketch! I have slowly slipped into the camp that knows we a a dying breed. Soon comes Windows 11 and the new release of "The Flying Game" by MS and with that another thing that has served us well becomes just something us old guys have in our memories.

Windows 11 preview actually gives me SLIGHTLY better performance in P3D v5.2 and "The Flying Game" is really good, so I have no gripes. But my gripes are with some devs. I am gonna head over to MilViz and let them know how I feel about this.

Just posted a letter on the MilViz forum as well as the following for the MSFS forum.

This is mostly for the fine folks at the MSFS Forum, but specifically for @Krazycolin - while not DIRECTLY related to the Corsair and MSFS, I hope my letter provides a little bit of perspective and explains the current disappointment I have with MilViz. Again, this really only affects your P3D customers, but it’s something to contemplate considering MilViz is now becoming a major player in the MSFS arena. To those who are not sure what this refers to, the new P3D 5.2 (a minor point release) broke MilViz WX Advantage weather radar product (as well as its implementation as it’s included in the $80 KingAir 350i and $60 P-180 EVO, the latter of which was only released a couple of months ago - both products include a version of the WX radar). The post on MilViz’ forum by their Tech Support states that they are not sure if they will update the weather radar to work in P3D 5.2. My thoughts are below.

Dear MilViz folk,

I am going to be as gentle as I can here, but this news is PRETTY upsetting to me. Let me start by saying that I have been with MSFS since release day and in January also invested about $5000 into P3D v5 and add-ons for it. I am not THAT much into military aircraft - I dabble here and there, but my main interest is civilian. I bought MilViz KA350i and the P-180 EVO for P3D v5 as well as the Corsair for MSFS. I would have bought more P3D aircraft by Milviz had you guys made some more v5-compatible aircraft out of your great portfolio. I have enjoyed every single MilViz product I have purchased so far.

That’s the preface. Here’s the not-so-good part. LIke I said, I only bought KA350 and P180 this year and now I find important functionality (the weather radar) potentially INOP in it - that’s within 6 months of purchase. I can’t really EXPECT support for them beyond the main version they are released for (so if they aren’t in v6, that would be disappointing but understandable). However, a POINT RELEASE compatibility that potentially won’t be maintained really irks me.

I guarantee you I am not the only one who runs both P3D and MSFS. I had plans to purchase every MilViz product released for MSFS, but this gives me a bad taste in my mouth regarding the company standing behind its products. I fully understand that MSFS is a priority due to the P3D sales drying up at a quick rate, but support for your P3D products (especially a new one such as P180) is EXPECTED for the current iteration of P3D. Depending on how this develops, I will have to make a decision regarding future support for MilViz products. What if an MSFS update (considering we have another 9 years of development promised for the sim) breaks all the MilViz aircraft there and they become partially disabled? This is certainly a subject worth thinking about and I hope the fine folks at MilViz heed the expression of frustration and disappointment from a pretty loyal supporter as something to consider in evaluating whether to update the current v5 products.

Respectfully,

Jeremy Smirnov, M.D.

I certainly hope that those of us who use BOTH sims (and thus have the purchasing decision of whether or not to support future MilViz products, EVEN on MSFS) will be able to give some stuff for MilViz to think about in terms of support for their P3D v5 products in the CURRENT version of P3D. I am pretty sure MilViz people won't be thrilled about me spreading the word about this to their potential new market, but... sometimes a little bit of transparency with potential customers THERE is in order. This isn't two companies. It's one - its product support should be consistent regardless of the sim platform.

They have just posted that they have decided to update the WX product for 5.2. Good news!

Glad to here Windows 11 is working for you and yes we will all eventually have to end up back in the MS world pretty soon. Your message to Milviz was pretty spot on and well written. Based on past performance, I am not real sure it will pass the "so what test" with them but all one can do is try. Thanks for your effort.

Your post poped up right as I posted. So Good for you!!
