What causes tides?

Wow, I love learning new stuff! I suspect that most of us have no factual understanding about what the causes of tidal action are. Now I know thanks to Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson having explained it in easy to understand and humorous words.

A deep dive into the complex, beautiful phenomenon of tides with Neil deGrasse Tyson and Chuck Nice. Get a closer look at https://brilliant.org/StarTalk where you'll discover more about the gravitational forces that keep our waves rolling.

And all this time I thought Proctor and Gamble made Tide.  🤔

Dr. Tyson didn't mention the other gravitational attractors that can affect tidal actions: the other planets in our solar system!

However, he may not have considered that the moon itself has wobbles in it's rotational orbit that by 2030 will increase the height of tides globally.

Quote

Thanks to a "wobble" in the moon's orbit and rising sea levels, every coast in the United States will face rapidly increasing high tides that will start "a decade of dramatic increases in flood numbers" in the 2030s. The conclusion, which was published in the Nature Climate Change journal by NASA Sea Level Change Science Team from the University of Hawaii, has to do with the moon's orbit, which takes 18.6 years to complete according to NASA.

Very cool. I'll be watching that later!

With all due respect to the good Doctor, the real reason the moon continuously moves the tides up and down is simply that it has to be shore.

There was a lighthouse owner that noticed the tide was coming way too high and might wash away his home. So he called 911

It was an emerging sea.

I've always loved limericks This thread reminded me of one:

"There was this girl from Boston, Mass. She wade into the sea and wet her ankles."

I know it doesn't rhyme right now but it will when the tide comes in.

I've often wondered about the influences of the various gravitational forces on the development of the human brain -- considering that we are mostly water.  Maybe there actually is a scientific component to astrology? I'm not a believer in astrology -- don't even know much about it but its odd that the girl I had the most in common with of all Ive ever met had a birthday right near mine.

We are mostly water?  Is that why I slosh when I walk? 🤔  Nah!  I'm mostly 🍺

Good one!!!!

Annoying people who dive in the swimming pool then noisily thrash out lengths with terrible swimming technique, irritating the hell out of everyone else who swimming using efficient strokes instead of churning up more water than a destroyer on a depth charge run, are what cause tides.

I thought most people knew. 😕

What about seasons, I bet many people don't know what causes seasons either?

Nope. The stars are in a completely different position from when the astrological charts were formulated. Its nonsense.

The other point of course is that the gravitational influence is in accordance with the inverse square law, it falls of by the square of the distance. So the effect on us is non-existent given how far away the constellations are.

As for the brain, the volume of water seems insufficient to be impacted significantly by the Moon's gravity. The gravitational field is too minuscule to impact the brain.  There were some Dutch researchers that suggested such a thing though. There are times when the Sun's gravity and the Moons team up to create higher tides. Full Moon and New Moon. No nutty behaviour is noted during  a New Moon though which would dispute the hypothesis. A Full Moon can impact sleep though which in theory could worsen psychiatric conditions. I know my OCD is far worse when I haven't slept.

In the UK, seasons and tides are included with the primary school syllabus (under 12 year old).
