Heavy stutters in clouds. Any advice?

Featured Replies

Goody morning guys,

I am experiencing a heavy stutter when flying through any kind of cloud while clouds are set to "ultra". I had this before SU5 so it's not a new issue. I am running on ultra preset with FPS capped to 30 and its completely smooth.

But as soon as I enter a cloud it immediately starts to stutter and it doesn't make a difference whether it is a thick overcast layer or just a little high altitude stratus. I can fly near them, above and below, no issue. Only inside its a stutterfest. Setting clouds to "high" resolves the issue but I'd really like to enjoy the full ultra experience.

Specs are:

RTX3080

32GB RAM and so on.

Has anyone a clue what setting inside or outside the game could be causing this? Any help appreciated!

Happy landings!

Performance related? Reduce your settings?

Nope. Absolutely not performance related.

Possibly heat related. Checked your temps?

Default usercfg opt file?

Another thought - is this happening with all aircraft?

What is your Render Scaling at?

I run a RS of 120 and with my 3090 it will reduce my frame rate to mid 20’s. I think it has to do with the AA.

Temperatures are all good. CPU and GPU are doing fine. My RS is 100 @4k resolution.

I just wonder why it only stutters when actually inside of the clouds. I can remember having the exact same problem back in FSX.

Maybe I should fiddle with the NCP AA settings a bit?

Could be an interaction between clouds and volumetric lighting?
Try turning off all external lights?

The fact that you are running all ultra might be a give away. Just because you have a souped up pc doesn't mean it'll handle everything you throw at it. (why do most think that?)

Because I run it at a full 30fps even at the biggest of cities. Why would a tiny little cloud of haze at 30.000 feet cause stutters in this setup? Your point may be valid if I was flying through a cloud layer that is thousands of feet thick. My souped up PC handles MSFS very well and has plenty of headroom. I am 99 percent sure this issue is not performance related.

Well it's choking on something. I run my clouds at ultra (only setting on ultra) and have no stutters in heavy cloud coverage, so it has to be some of your settings. Reduce some of your settings and see what happens

Are you sure it's stutters and not normal turbulence everyone gets inside clouds? Please post a video.

There are some settings that are just not worth having on Ultra.  There's almost no visual difference but they're computing thousands of extra cycles in the background.  Check out some "MSFS settings comparisons" videos on YouTube.

Sounds to me like you just need to turn some stuff down a bit to be honest. And if you choose carefully, it probably won't even be that noticeable when you do.
