World Updates vs Simulator Updates

Featured Replies

This video about World Update 6 references some MFSS fixes, including "graphics fixes", and goes on to discuss the changes creating potential issues of frame rates vs quality.  This begs a question I have had for some time but have not so far seen played out, so to speak.  Simulator Updates (SU#'s) have not to this date been optional.  Start the sim and if updates are out they are automatic.  Not so with World Updates. World Updates are optional.  Due to where I have flown MSFS to-date, the only World Update I have installed is the World Update for North America (is that WU2?).  So are there improvements to the simulator itself, so to speak, embedded in World Updates?  Or are the improvements simply interim simulator updates installed on the same dates or time as the World Updates?

The crux of my question is this.  If we do not install every World Update, are there fixes/improvements to the core simulator that we are then missing?

Anything updating the core sim is included in the mandatory update that drops the same day as the world update.

I do recall that there us usually a mini "Sim Update" with the World Updates.  Unless my memory is failing (which is possible as a result of ... cough ... age), I thought I recall patching the sim during a world update .. sort of like a hotfix.  The version number of the sim changes then too.

This is NOT the scenery update per se.  That part is the optional download from the Marketplace.

I would think to answer your question, that you get the minor sim updates via the patch - no choice on this - just like full on Sim Updates.

The scenery is your choice to add or not.

I think they said there is also some additional CTD fixes that should be included with this one.  Some of the left over SU5 stuff, IRRC.

World Updates include new scenery, which is usually an optional download from the marketplace or content manager.  You are not forced to download any new scenery that comes with a World Update.  However, World Updates may contain other fixes or changes to the code, which you do have to download.

If you decide not to download the optional scenery for a World Update, you simply save space on your hard drive and you won't see that updated scenery when you fly by it.  Even if you don't download the optional World Update sceneries, you are still forced to download any changes to the code that Asobo has made as part of that update.  Any changes to the code will be a part of either the update you get from the Windows Store, or any updates you download when MSFS checks for updates.

I got all of the world updates when they first became available, except for #1 Japan. Now it is apparently too late. All optional stuff in marketplace has been downloading just fine for last few months, except the Japan update. I get an 'error 3' and a message something like 'You need to be running version xxx.xx.xx to download' or some such version number from long ago. Maybe the issue is not what I suspect, but perhaps you only are granted some time period to download a 'world update' and then later it is too late. I'm not sure.

No, that would not make sense. If you buy and download the game now you will have the latest build from the beginning, without the Japan content in the marketplace.

All owned content must be downloadable at any time.

Maybe you need a clean reinstall to fix it. Certainly another annoying bug...
