Global Ship AI V2 -- No Ships

Featured Replies

Hi all,

As the title suggests, I installed version 2 of Global Ship AI. Was a large download and a long extraction to my community folder. However, in the sim, there's no ships. I tried Long Beach, CA, which always has lots of ships. I also gave Cook Inlet in Alaska a try, another spot that should have lots of ships.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance !

First question comes to mind, what's your traffic config like?

All sliders full right.

From his FAQ:

To check if you have an installation issue go to an area with a lot of traffic. I recommend departing from Calais, France flying towards Dover, UK - you should see both ferries and cargo traffic. If no traffic appears check the following - Did you install the unzipped GAIST_MSFS_V2 correctly in your community folder? if yes, did you adjust settings for Ships and Ferries  5-10%? You find that setting under general options traffic.

I installed this over the weekend and have been seeing a bunch of ships. Long Beach to San Diego I saw a few ships on the way and a few default ones down around San Diego. Just now taking off from John Wayne. Also did a few flights in Norway and saw a cruise ship or two, a few ferries, and some other ships in the distance I didn’t get close to. I’m at 50 on ships and Ferries as well as 50 on leisure boats, which are my default settings. I’m keeping it as is for now. Looks fantastic. Why go down to 7?

Ships and Ferries should be set between 5-10% according to the FAQ of the release.

Are there subfolders? Sometimes those will prevent the sim from seeing the files.

Nothing to see here, everybody just move along...

6% and make sure there's no extra subfolder.

My understanding is that at a 10% setting and below, MSFS default ships and their routes 'disappear' from the sim. As a result there's no conflict or collisions with them by 3rd party ships.

What I don't understand about freeware Global Ships is with regards to that requirement of needing to set settings at less than 10%. One of their 'selling' points is that they have a lot of ships and variations. The question I have is this: what is the point of having a lot of them if you can only use less than 10% of what they have? That kind of 'progress' is like taking 10 steps forwards and 9 steps back.

I'm not sure at all about the above statements. Someone please correct me if I'm missing something.

Hardware: i7-8700k, GTX 1070-ti, 32GB ram, NVMe/SSD drives with lots of free space.
Software: latest Windows 10 Pro, P3Dv4.5+, FSX Steam, and lots of addons (100+ mostly Orbx stuff).

I had all of the shipping that Orbx sells + the freeware ships installed. Never had any ships until I un-installed all of the Orbx shipping programs, leaving only the v2 of  global ship A.I. installed ( I do have Bijans Island Huts and boats installed - it works also.

I think you are looking at it from wrong direction, it's not 10% of the ships from mod, it's 10% of total number of slots available for ships. 6-10% allows for all of versions of the mod ships, with not much of,or any of default ships. Maybe I am wrong, but I do remember statement by author that the percentage given was to limit default models

Why limit default models to 10 and not zero percent? Why can't the mod ships have a 100%?  Why not 50%, 75% or some other higher percentage?  If only 10% is available, one can deduce that there is 90% wastage in development time or code that is better spent elsewhere...  From a mathematical point of view, a 10% part is less than 100% of the whole regardless of how it's cut.

I'm wishing we have more info or a peak at the algorithms or code and see what is actually what. Ten percent of  *anything*  when 100% is supposed to be the ideal means we are missing somethings.

From my understanding (and I may be wrong) the mod presents 100% ships regardless of if MSFS is set to 5-10% or 100%. Setting it to 5-10% is only for the default MSFS ships and has no effect on the mod's ships. Thus, setting it to 5-10% is so that the MSFS default ships don't show up and conflict with the routes of the Mod's ships.
