Suddenly Repeated CTD's

Featured Replies

Hi folks. SO about 10 days ago I updated my gaming PC to Windows 11. Then, yesterday, having not used MSFS for a while, I started everything up. All seemed well but no matter what I do, after about 5-10 minutes I get a CTD with exception '5'.

I have read multitudes of things on the internet about resolving it but so far, nothing has worked.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I don't mind little bugs, or some stuttering that has to be worked out, but CTD's mean not using the app.

FYI, I have a ROG Maximus XII Hero motherboard, i9-10900 CPU, ASUS GTX-3090 GPU, and 32Gb of 3200mhx memory. All hard drives are either M.2 or SSD.

Case: (Lian Li PC-011 Dynamic XL), PSU: (MEG Ai300p pcie 5 & ATX 3.0), Motherboard: (ASUS TUF Gaming x670E-PLUS WIFI 6E), CPU: (AMD Ryzen 7 7800-X3D)

Was it working fine with W10? Can  you roll back.

I had not used it for several weeks, but yes it was working with Windows 10. However, I do not want to roll back as I am enjoying Windows 11. I just used DDU to completely remove all graphics software and then reinstalled the latest Nvidia software fresh. Have to test now to see if will make any difference.

Just checking...  If it was an over install rather than a clean install of W11, have you got the specific W11 Nvidia drivers for your 3090, or are you still on the W10 drivers.  I have heard switching to the newer specific W11 drivers has cured a few weird problems for some people.

Well, I used GeForce Experience to identify and install the latest driver. I would assume that app knows what I am supposed to have, wouldn't it?

Well, updating the graphics driver didn't help, I got a CTD exception code 5 before the app was even all the way up this time. Man, this is really frustrating.

Got to keep in mind, that W 11 will turn out to have some bugs in it just like every new OS. One of these could be affecting MSFS,

Did you do a fresh install of the graphics driver?

Frustrating Rob I know.  And the error code '5' is no help.  Have you checked in event viewer to see what the faulting module is?

There is also a long thread to sift through here if it is of any help.

Have you made sure all recent updates to Win 11 have been installed, quite a lot of small updates recently.

I will check the module. HOWEVER, I took everything out of my Community folder and restarted MSFS and so far nothing bad happening. I have quite a few things in that folder so it will take a while to see which addon is causing the issue. Will keep this thread informed of my progress in case it helps anyone else.

Thanks all for participating with my issues :-).

UPDATE: Well, so much for that hope. It just crashed again with exception code 5. The faulting module is FlightSimulator.exe every time.

I'm running win 11 with a 3080 and was getting ctd and msfs lock ups until I found out if I had fast enabled in my Nvida settings or g sync enable

Could you clarify so I know exactly where to look for that? Thanks. Anything is worth a try at this point.

1. Empty Community folder.

2. Ensure video driver up to date.

3. Download and install latest chipset drivers.

4. Check Device Manager to make sure all other drivers are up to date.

After doing all of this and assuming all windows updates have been done, consider downloading and flashing the latest BIOS for your MOBO.

Good luck because an uninstall of msfs and maybe a fresh Windows reinstall comes next.

Also try disabling any video or cpu overclocks if you had any.

Try going into your device manager under USB devices and set all USB devices to not sleep.  I had to do that when I updated to Windows 11. (don't think this is your problem, but worth a try)

Try turning ON or OFF your hardware acceleration in graphics settings to see if that helps.
