Google Map Adon

Featured Replies

Okay if I can please ask that we keep this factual as best we can.

What's the advantage / disadvantage of using this Google maps add-on

Looking at things such as performance improvement/reduction... impact to other add-on...

Obviously the reason for the add-on is scenery improvement.. so we can ignore that. I'll test that myself.

Yeah, this has been covered extensively. All you need to do is use the search function and have a little less snark next time.

was looking for a summary over several pages of reading which branches off into sub topics.

Apparently its easier  to reply and be unhelpful than use the same key strokes to give a helpful one-liner

Maybe use "Google" to search for what you need next time .

It makes a great improvement in my flights. Mainly down low where you are getting a good look at the scenery. The benefit is Google textures are so much nicer than Bings. Using this add-on does not alter nor prevent Bing's photogrametry nor the Blackshark object building. Everything is the same except the textures are better, I mean the colors are realistic, never washed out. And the textures are in higher detail resolution. Paved roads look like paved roads, you can see the detail.

There is a new version today 2.2.5 Nov.12, 2020 which cures the problems with the older versions. The Windows,System32,Drivers,Etc,hosts file now changes itself correctly as you select Run and Stop in the ap.

To use it without issues:

Start msfs first then run the app, then create your flight in msfs. Otherwise flights may stall and never load.

You must also prevent Bing data from conflicting (CTD) with Google Earth data. There is an easy cure: First before doing anything else turn Rolling Cache off in MSFS General Options Data. Then delete rolling cache. Then leave rolling cache off, it makes no difference if you have good internet speed.

If you don't have a decent internet speed then turn rolling cache back on and always fly with this ap on (run) or always fly with this app off (stop), in order to avoid conflicts being stored in the rolling cache data which can cause CTD.

Can't have anything causing 'issues' can we? 😄

Of course it won't last, but for as long as it does, it is a LARGE improvement in ground textures. Not a small one, but a very large one.  There's literally no reason NOT to use it for as long as you can.

I'm not actually sure that MS will be / can be the ones to put an end to it... but Google sure can and likely will, unless they enjoy the poke at Bing maps ;).

Really, you answered your own question in the OP: reason to use it? Much improved ground textures.

If there's any negative at all, I can't think of one. Zero difference in performance.
