PMDG DC-6?

One of the advantages of this plane is its ability to fly low without incurring a fuel burn penalty.

Since its a piston engine, the fuel burn is about the same from sea level all the way up to its ceiling.

I fly mostly at 4 to 6 thousand feet and get to enjoy the fantastic scenery this sim has to offer.

Yes, its pretty slow but it sure is fun.

I would say I fly this plane 90 % of the time, its that good.

Same for me, no having to fly at 34,000 feet where you can't enjoy the great scenery in MSFS. Most of my flights are 6-8 thousand feet unless I am in the mountains.

I will not add to the litany of legitimate praises above, just raise two things to know :

- It works OK on a weak computer but even better in the MSFS Developer mode with the experimental "NanoVC for XML gauges" option.

- There is a learning curve. You get a Artificial Engineer to do the engine management heavy lifting but you still have to do some computations like the Top of Descent and energy management  is crucial during the approach for instance. This is not exactly  a forgiving Cessna 172... There is a ton of very useful documentations coming with the product but PMDG has also released about 10-odd You Tube tutorials, highly recommended to watch.

How can you compare a DC6 and a A 320, two totally different aircraft???

Well, I mean, apple pie and liver are two totally different foods, but I can definitely compare them and tell you which one I'd rather be eating. 😉

I think it's completely legit to prefer flying a modern airliner over an old bucket of bolts. Personally I like 'em both, but not everyone will.

I guess you are right, Flying a modern airliner to me is like watching paint dry, but each to his own.

Flying an old piston popper carbon spewer is like watching paint dry IMO.

Actually, piston engines are more efficient than turbines. And you can't let the autopilot fly the entire flight either.

Like to see those number miles flown per passenger compared to modern High Bypass fan jet?

Utterly agree with you, the AFE is very helpful to get into it, and eventually you just wanna fly it all by yourself which i'm doing now, well occupied during an one or two-hour journey, absolutely the best experience since i join the sim, please read the useful documentations.

All other addons are retired and i'll appreciate them for teach me the foundational knowledge and skills. Looking forward to some GA on this level, which i think doesn't exist right now.

Thanks for all of the great advice...I think I am going to give it a try! I will report back...I have fallen into the trap of having too many planes in the simulator...Those free downloads are hard to pass up, but I find that I try so many of them that I am not learning a whole lot about any of them. I need to concentrate on just a few, maybe one of each class of plane. The DC-6 sounds like a good place to start!

Blasphemy. There is no such things as too many aircraft in a flight simulator.

What this aircraft brings is depth. After some flying with a light load and to/from low altitude airports, I try to learn taking off and land with a heavy load and/or at higher altitude.  A new ball game 😉.

You can't go wrong with the PMDG DC-6.

But do yourself a favor - check out the tutorial videos on Youtube.

They are the best and most complete tutorial videos I have seen for any aircraft. Each is 15 or 20 minutes long, so you can watch them in one sitting.

Simmer's wisdom ! Mine at least 😄 ! Better a few good simcraft to learn and appreciate for months. A liner (old or modern), a couple of GA/bush birds, a couple of warbirds, a couple of military jets.

If you follow my guild when using the AFE it should make your life/time with the DC-6 very easy, PMDG have pined it on the top of there DC-6 forum.

Just follow that and all should be very easy. Its all of Robert Vid's and bits he forget etc all in one easy to follow guild.

Enjoy!
