What happened to my files???

I am sure you are aware that this concept is the only way for us to enjoy (normally...) detailed and realistic world sceneries. How else would you have that on your hard disk? We have sometimes to accept some degree of compromise. The alternative is to go back to P3D and/or XP.

I actually agree with your statement here.  Just wish hacking on the sim monthly wasn't in the cards, especially at the rate things are broken.  Maybe things will mellow out in the next year...

I did Lep!  But still had problems.

My installation was on the F drive.  It found my install when I pointed it to that location, verified the files, and was happy with them.

It seems some want to stay stuck in the same argument even when it doesn't apply.😐

Always back up the official folder as that is where most of the game is and you can sneak it in on a new install to save download time. Saved my a$$ a few times and let me put it easily on a new drive.

M have backed up my harddrive for years with Macrium Reflex. It has saved me more than once with P3D when something got deleted, and I was able to get the file and replace it. Once my entire HD crashed, I bought a new one, and was up and running in about 2 hours.

And was that the free version of Macrium ? I take it it can be used for cloning and operating system ?

No, I got the pay version which was not very expensive, it let you get individual files, which I really liked. Over the years, it cost almost nothing.

Opted in on the Beta not so long ago as a solution to the SU7 woes.
After reading people had some problems opting out of the Beta i decided to stick with it.

After reading this topic and this one (https://www.avsim.com/forums/topic/613568-my-entire-install-of-msfs-just-vanished/) i started the Beta MSFS (store version) and on loading there was a quick flash of some cmd screen, then a bit later the loading screen with another window on top saying.... just a minute... and it came up with a 12xGB download. It pointed to the C drive which is where my previous install was not installed (i use a dedicated drive for MSFS)
I directly thought ... here we go... why... i didn't opt out of the Beta at all. Why... Why?
So i pointed it my dedicated MSFS drive and instead of downloading everything, the sim just loaded without downloading anything.
Thought i managed it alright but when it was loaded, all general options gone, all controls where still there.

But this is not the way to go...

Same. The other side effect was that all my bush trip progress was lost, but other activity completion (such as for landing challenges) saved.

You can use the old Win 7 system image backup - it's built into Win 10 - and it's free! You can even add non-system drives to the image. Individual drives from the system image can be mounted to copy files or folders, or the image can be used to restore your entire system, including non-system drives.

I used to use Acronis True Image, but it used a custom scheme that required a custom boot disk to be able to restore a system. Windows system image can be restored simply by booting with a standard Win boot disk, or Windows install disk and running the troubleshooting tools - and IT'S FREE. If your system is bootable, you don't need to boot from disc/thumbdrive, you can just reboot into the repair tool and restore from there.

Over the last several years I've successfully restored my entire system at least 3 times from the stock Win system image.

After opting out of the most recent beta I had to restore the OneStore and Community directories after MSFS updater wiped them out.

I would trust that system as much as I would trust MSFS 2020 to not erase itself. I will stick with a non MS backup system.

Not sure if that applies since i did say i had the same problem, the game decided to just wipe itself clean off my pc. Im just saying that having it installed in the default location did that.If i had it on a custom folder, i would not have to re download the whole thing. Thankfully, i had another install on another PC, i just copied the community + official folders from it, pointed to them, and everything was back to normal.

But yes, this system is a big pile of horse poo. Never ever will i get a game from the MS Store again. Steams the way to go (i think they dont suffer from this problem, could be wrong)

The MS Store is not the problem.  Not sure what is as Asobo is trying to improve the sim and in turn wipe out legacy code (FSX) that no longer works. In turn that seems to break as much as it fixes.😏

The MS Store is part of the problem, like it not finding updates automatically. Usually have to reboot the PC to have the update show up, etc, etc
