February 24, 20224 yr Hi, I want to upgrade my video card GTX1080 TI to an RTX3090, does the new card needs more power? I currently have 750 watts. February 24, 20224 yr A 3090? I'd guess yes you would. Says a 750w required but I'd like a little buffer. You can always try it hehe Edited February 24, 20224 yr by ryanbatcund | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |  Â
February 24, 20224 yr From my past experience with 10900K and 3090, 750 W power supply was at the border line. I would suggest that you download a free software "open hardware monitor" at https://openhardwaremonitor.org and start monitoring your PC. Each computer is so different, with the info provided you can fine tune your system or determine in your case if is necessary to change the PSU. As an example I used it to see if it was a performance benefit with HT on or off, I fine tuned my affinity mask based on CPU core temps and loads for the P3D and other software for better performance. I also had a 1080 Titan and switched to a 3090 Founders edition and found out that the first one was way quieter and less power hungry, performance between the two was negligible and made me wonder why did I switch. Me personally, I would wait for a while before new video cards show up on the market and re-evaluate. Give it a try before anything, please. 747 Captain for the last 39 years, and still learning.Â

Pierre Nantel  Surprisingly Nvidia say 750 watt minimum. But then of course if you buy an OC 3090 its requires more. But no, its nonsense, I wouldn't risk a 750 watt. Especially in combination with a 10900K. Others who have 750 watt PSU's have had issues with transient power spikes. The 3080 and 3090 likes to do that. Those users who have switched to 1000 watts have mitigated the issue. I opted for a 1000 watt EVGA PSU. Edited February 24, 20224 yr by martin-w
February 25, 20224 yr 750 watts is the bare minimum for a GTX 3090. I think it is much safer to pair the 3090 with a high quality PSU in the 900 to 1000 watt range. My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.
February 25, 20224 yr Author Thanks everyone, I am now questioning if I will get as many benefits for my money. I now understand that P3D or MSFS2020 will not leverage the extra memory. With P3D v5.3 and my GTX 1080, i have a steady 35 FPS with no stuttering. Maybe a lower card like then RTX3080 or 70 with at less 10 gigs will give as much benefits than an RTX 3090. If I decide to upgrade, I will also upgrade my PSU to 1000 watts. Thanks for all the advice. Nvidia released drivers that helped somewhat but the issue remained for some. It also depends on what else you are doing with your system of course. Once we add the 3090 OC bios and heavy 10900K CPU overlocks and other demands, plus the power spikes you can see the issue. You'd likely be okay with a quality 850 watt PSU. The OP's 750 isn't something I'd risk though. Interestingly, the new ATX v3.0 standard has features in place to deal with the power spike tolerance issue. The new power spike tolerances are significant, as much as 200% of rated power for brief periods. Intel have also said that they may impose power spike limits for cards. Edited March 7, 20224 yr by martin-w
