Is ORBX FTX Global needed with P3D v5?

I believe that the only difference is that the v5 version does not include the airport fixes, such as updated altitude and airport backgrounds, that previous versions included.

Well, I downloaded the V5 version of Vector, and started a flight from KTPA (Tampa) toward KEWR (Newark), and sure enough, I experienced occasional stutters and pauses to the extent that I closed P3d as it entered North Carolina airspace.  IMMEDIATELY uninstalled Vector V5.  Back to smooth flights.

Interesting. I got rid of Vector and am also experiencing way less stutters! Great discussion, guys!

Just curious - you guys remember that Vector has a configuration app that allows you to change the level of detail to suit your PC ?

Yes, I remember this program. I had multiple profiles. One could also deactivate the AECs that came with Vector.

Inspired by this thread and the UTX thread, I did a reinstall without UTX USA and Canada and without FTX Global.

Surprisingly not bad around Los Angeles, San Francisco and Toronto, the roads and coastlines look decently sharp, plenty of roads. The default textures look like they have fewer buildings and trees than Orbx and look a bit more sparse. This may be the way that Orbx did their textures. The seasonal colours are more questionable, Toronto looked pretty beige for Spring.

It did resolve an issue I had where with my previous combination some of the landclass was uneven and there would be square patches that had different coloured tiles. I'm wondering if FTX Global and Open LC would be a better combination but I'll try keeping this out for now. Trying to go for a more "light" P3D experience.

It may be that winter textures are still being used with a gradual transformation to spring.

What does England look like? It was horrendous in earlier versions of P3D and FTX Global was essential to bring back the lush scenery. England is not a desert as the ESP programmers would have you believe.

it's like everybody by default goes to FTX Global right away 😄 ... I can take some requests (lat longs, date, time may help?) and get back with some screenshots ... where in England?,

what is the best way to share screenshots?

I wasn’t specific because it doesn’t really matter. Locate to EGBB right in the middle. The overhead view is fine. Zoom out so you can see the city of Birmingham.

You need a hosting service like Dropbox (free) and then link to the image using the “Insert other media” option.

Thanks!

I located my aircraft at four different airports and took screenshots of the overhead map view. EGCC, LEMG, KMIA and EDDF.

I then closed P3D and loaded Orbx Central. I selected FTX Global for v5 and uninstalled it.

Back in P3D I located to two airports and compared the overhead view to the screenshots. Absolutely no difference at all.

In the manual it states that default files in scenery\world\texture are replaced by Orbx ones. I counted the number of files in that folder from a backup. There were 16285. I now have 16256. I find it hard to accept 29 files comprise the FTX Global install.

What is going on? Can anyone who has uninstalled FTX Global confirm the number of files they have in scenery\world\texture please?

Update: After uninstalling P3Dv5 I discovered there were a lot of Orbx files in scenery\world\texture which meant FTX Global was enabled irrespective of whether it was installed or not.

Below is the original screenshot with FTX Global installed and a second one with just the default P3D textures. Definitely different now!

I'll stay without FTX Global for now and see how I get on.

What about less "popular" places?

13600KF - 32GB DDR4 - RTX4070 - UW1440p GSync - USB DAC/Amp - 2TB NVMe+2TB SSD - Windows 11 - Gladiator NXT EVO - 1 Gbps Fiber  - MSFS 2024

That’s a city I rarely visit because the scenery has been so poor in previous versions of P3D and UTX never covered it. That’s why I had to double check I was creating these screenshots correctly.

If you have FTX Global it’s a simple process to run this comparison.

Are you installing Global Base directly into the P3dv5 folder ?

If so, why aren't you installing it into it's own library folder, AFAIK this is what's recommended.

I strongly suspect that both pics still have ORBX present, untick ORBX Base and re-install P3D scenery to make sure you are only seeing LM's base scenery (this is only if you have installed ORBX into the P3D folder).

There are an awful lot more than 29 files alright, as this pic attests to , and that's only the Scenery& Texture dirs, albeit the other dirs are quite small.

I'm not sure if this is true but I had some memory of someone saying FTX Global just overwrote the textures in P3D.

This is EGBB (Birmingham) https://imgur.com/a/Q78litQ

This is CYZD (Downsview, Toronto) https://imgur.com/a/ZVdtUFp, pretty brown for April but lots of roads looks fairly accurate

@Sparkrite,

The options given to me to install to v5 show no recommendation. I have always preferred to install into P3D directly rather than externally. That option, I presume, is for users who are short of space on the P3D drive.

I have a main ORBX folder under P3Dv5. In it are several folders including one named FTX_OLC. Within that are three subfolders - OLC_AA, OLC_EU1 and OLC_NA1. each containing a scenery and texture folder. Total space taken is 1.4Gb.

It is in each of those the FTX Global files are installed. There are 3 entries in scenery.cfg pointing to those folders. After uninstalling it those folders no longer exist nor do the entries in scenery.cfg.

How many files do you have in scenery\world\texture? I have 16,256. Do you have any starting with FTX?
