FENIX - Hyperthreading & awesome support

Featured Replies

Some of you may have seen my posts showing frustration with very unstable, stuttery performance in the Fenix A320.

I just wanted to point out two things:-

1). Aamir contacted me directly today, offering to work with me through PC, MSFS and Fenix App settings to try to gain better, smoother performance. This is an unprecedented level of support; the founder and lead developer providing that degree of personalised support to one (moaning) customer 😄 . This confirms what we all aready know - @Aamir and Fenix are a truly open, responsive, customer-centric business that care whether each customer is satisfied with their purchase, and if not, wants to do everything they can to change that.  In an age of faceless, corporate automated responses and chatbot support, this is something we need to value, support and greatly appreciate!

2). Before taking up any of Aamir's time I wanted to do everything I could at my end to get to the bottom of what could be causing this issues I was having - which was not low FPS, as reported by quite a lot of people - but instead, really abrupt, jerky unsmooth performance and sound stutters.   I did a WMIC check in a Command Line and to my horror noticed that Hyperthreading was disabled on my PC.   This was due to some testing I was doing for a X-Plane 11 developer.  I'd not reactivated HT.  With an older CPU with only 4 cores, running with HT off gave me only 4 logical cores too.  With HT back on and 8 logical cores, I just performed a test flight and - heck I don't know how much MSFS nor the Fenix A320 utilizes logical cores, perhaps it was placebo effect™ but I am seeing much more stable, steady performance.   It's not perfect but it at last facilitates an enjoyable flight in this beautiful aircraft.

Sorry for the episode of War & Peace but I aspire to be a fair and reasonable person and, having made my disatisfaction known, wanted to balance this with the above.  👍😎

good read, thanks

My CPU does not support hyper threading so I have been wondering if the 'display threading' toggle to on is expected to do anything.

Well said, and glad you found out what was going on for you. Fenix and especially Aamir are the new gold standard for support.

For transparency: I'm a community mentor at the BATC discord. However, I do not get paid for it in any way.

Yes, it should, because you still have 4 cores to share the load with. But the effect will not be big on 4 cores only.

Great to hear. 👍

Its very easy to see what MSFS users and what Fenix users.

CTRL+ALT+DEL

Task manager

performance tab

Then at the bottom > Open recorce manager

CPU tab

Now you will see all you CPU/etc

Now load up MSFS with a GA and go fly and watch and see what core your MSFS hammers.

Now work your setting and cap your FPS to 30 and make sure the core MSFS users do not run at 100%, get it down to around 85%.

After that now load the Fenix

When your on the msfs opening screen/menus

go back in Task manager >Detail tab

You will see two Fenix apps, becasue your should start the FenixSim A320 before you start MSFS

The two you will see are that one and one called Fenix bootstrap

Right click on both of them and you will see a menu>set affinity now you will see al the core them apps are using. Un tick the cores you now know MSFS is useing.

Now start a flight and now go back into the details tab and look for Fenix Diplay app and again make sure it now using the core MSFS likes to hammer.

Now you have the best chance of stutter free sim'ing.

Even with my 20 core Fenix gets it wrong and take the Diplays off core 0-10 and leaves on 11-19, bad as msfs hammers my core 19 so I set it up to use cores 4-15.

So Dont take it for granted the treading from Fenix is right for every CPU with and without HT.

I do the above every flight, it only takes seconds once you have done it a few times. I just like to make sure am getting the best performance I can.

It's great that you got help from the man himself but I think Fenix really needs a support forum where we can help each other with the small issues while the dev team can focus on the bigger things...

Your cpu does not support HT?

Are you sure about that. What cpu are you running?

Go to the Discord page and the section "Support-Threads". All problems are posted on that page, and the developer is frequently there .

Aamir’s approach to this project is top notch and should be a model for others to emulate.
