There are laws in America where for someone to qualify for a certain government program or escape disenfranchisement of a common right, you must disclose your user name for every social media you have participated in.

I did not use the same user name on the hobby forums I have joined over the years. I could not possibly disclose all my user names and which social media sites I was on, however briefly, if my life depended on it. 

What is and what is not 'social media' can have serious legal repercussions when living under a government which does not highly value freedom.

 

 

I have never signed up for any social media like twitter of face book or YouTube.  I use the same one (birdguy) for Avsim, Flightsim.com, and Orbx.  

Having held various levels of top secret and NATO clearances the government already knows everything about me.

And I always sign my posts with my real name.

I agree Noel. I've never used any of that social media stuff either. And like you, in a former life I've also held top secret clearances, both DOD and AEC. I'll never forget the day the feds asked my next door neighbor if I was a  good guy 🙂. And what the government doesn't know about me Google certainly does.....

ME: Okay, but I am taking my cholesterol drugs and I want the pizza I order usually!
GOOGLE: Excuse me sir, but you haven’t taken your meds regularly. According to our database, you only purchased a box of 30 cholesterol tablets once 4 months ago from Drug RX Network.
ME: I bought more in another pharmacy.
GOOGLE: This does not appear on your credit card statement.
ME: I paid in cash.
GOOGLE: But according to your bank statement, you haven’t withdrawn enough cash.
ME: I have other sources of money.
GOOGLE: This does not appear in your last tax return. Unless you have an undeclared source of income, which is against the law.
ME: WHAT?
GOOGLE: I’m sorry, sir. I can reassure you that we use this information with the sole intention of helping you.
ME: Enough! I can not handle it anymore! I hate Google, Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and all the other word not allowed social sites. I am going to an island without internet, without TV, where there is no mobile phone service and no one who can watch and spy on me!
GOOGLE: I understand sir, but first you have to renew your passport. It expired 6 weeks ago …

On the AVSIM social media website, you and I have very similar opinions concerning all the topics on which I've seen you participate. Happy to explain in the simplest way I know how with the understanding that it still may not make sense without the experience of other social media websites as examples.

Memes of cats and cats as profile pictures are very common on Facebook and other social media sites that are not AVSIM forum. So, to see the opinion that AVSIM is not social media conjoined to a profile picture with a cat is ironic to some viewers of this thread. 

PS, before the influx of Redditors at the inception of MSFS and PMDG set up their own forum, many of us signed our posts with our real name. After PMDG left AVSIM, there seemed to be a culture shift here to stop the use of real world names. At that time, I changed my profile name as well.

When I was a kid you could always see pictures of the most-wanted criminals in the post office. But I never thought of it as a jail. Maybe I'll change the picture to a dog and pretend I'm in a kennel. Or pulling a sled. I still don't see why a picture of a cat associates me with social media. I guess I'm just too old for this stuff.
