Well sometimes I wonder. It can be downright antisocial at times.😁

i9-10850K, ASUS TUF GAMING Z490-PLUS (WI-FI), 32GB G.SKILL DDR4-3603 / PC4-28800, GIGABYTE RTX5080 16GB WF OC 3 FAN running 3440x1440

I call it home, away from the social media. I remember when I bought FS98 and called Microsoft support for something, can’t remember what for exactly. It was at the time where there was no automated call systems and I got connected directly to a support rep, which told me about Avsim. I logged on and immediately started downloading add ons. The rest is history.

I also wouldn't consider it social media - too often discussions are lacking proper tact and savoir-faire.

By the same standard, I also wouldn't consider most social media to be social media.

Whether or not AVSIM is "considered" to be social media, it is, by definition.

What is Social Media? (techtarget.com)

Social media Definition & Meaning - Merriam-Webster

Evidently the Avsim forums fall squarely into the definition of "social media".
Asking the question "Do you consider AVSIM to be "Social Media"?" clearly indicates that the OP has their own personal definition of what "social media" are.
The number of voters who share that view would indicate that their views of what social media are, vary from the accepted definition.

Essentially, social media are what the user wants them to be but those who set themselves up as social media personalities, or experts in a specific field, or indeed any high social media profile must be prepared for the inevitable attempts to knock them from their perches.
Thin-skinned people will find "social media" an uncomfortable place to be, including of course, here.

Social media, as we know it today, might be characterized as what brought down Democracy in the future. But, as far as AVSIM is concerned; no. I think it's a bunch of likeminded avgeeks coming together to celebrate, discuss and sure, at times, have hearty debates about our hobby. I honestly look at AVSIM as a break from actual social media and I'm very glad this forum exists.

Isn't this a discussion for another forum?

A big part of how "social" a media is about moderation.

I'm part of a forum where there is zero tolerance if you go off topic or get toxic. Threads are closed quickly or users are being banned (happens seldom because of the zero tolerance, you get a warning and that suffices most of the times)

I feel the Avsim mod team does a good job, but it is for a reason that some people call Avsim toxic.

I am sure that a real moderator will be along to move it to Hangar chat before long.

Although they are public forums, similar to the big social media services, sim forums tend to gather fans of sims or those with questions rather than the public at large.  Given the limited interest in sim forums and their structure and rules, I don't really regard sim forums as social media.

My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.

Probably could be considered technically as social media. But for me, "social media" means the likes of Twatter and all that stuff where people just generally vent, waggle their w*llies or generally like to prove my own personal theory that evolution peaked in the 1960s and has been regressional ever since. We have our moments in here, but nothing seems to get close to what goes on out there.

Ryzen 9 7900X, Corsair H150 AIO cooler, 64 Gb DDR5, Asus X670E Hero m/b, 3090ti, 13Tb NVMe, 8Tb SSD, 16Tb HD, 55" Philips 4k HDR monitor, EVGA 1600w ps, all in Corsair 7000D airflow case. Sims in use - 2020, 2024, XP-12 and -11, FSX/SE, P3Dv4.5 and v5.4. DCS and AFS2 installed but rarely used
