X-Plane 12 full release in December 2022

Featured Replies

Laminar Research showed the following in their X-Plane 12 presentation this afternoon, November 5th, at the Flight Simulator Weekend in the Netherlands:

So final release of Xplane 12 is scheduled for next month. Would be a very nice X-mas present 😊.

Wonder what they mean by most successful ever? In terms of sales, or smoothness?

I agree, some context would be nice.

The latest beta did increase fps for me in clouds so I was glad to see that.  Looks like my 1080 ti has some life left.

Definitely in terms of sales. The presentation was held by Thomas Meeks, who is listed as director of Marketing & Operations. And we know what makes those marketing people happy ....

Open XR support for VR caught my eye, this is monumental, so we don't have to rely on Steam VR again thankfully

Well I find that very interesting seeing that our friends on the other side like to trout those low user numbers on steam as some marketing leading indicator as to how much interest there is in X Plane 12 when I remind them that it does not tell the whole story. Kudos to LR marketing team for getting the word out finally.

Really, really glad to hear that it has been their most successful launch ever. Can't wait for December!!

Is there a link for the full presentation ?

Small note of caution - I work in marketing in a senior role so am well aware of how these things work.

Most successful “launch” with no further context says nothing. If you define launch as “first 24 hours” and then compare sales of XP 11 in its first 24 hours vs 12 in its first 24 … well. Also, most successful can mean anything from “one more unit sold” to “thousands more units sold”.

And that’s not even getting into “success” - sales? Servers didn’t crash? I assume it’s sales but they don’t say so

General rule - marketers love nothing more than hard data because it makes our lives so much easier. If the slide could have said “XP 12 outsold XP 11 in the first week by a factor of 5x”, you better believe they would have said it! When you don’t have hard data, you do stuff like this.

I bought XP 12 on launch day and would love for it to succeed, but this slide doesn’t mean anything.

Agreed - I flew through an area of CBs and didn't notice much of an fps hit at all.

Yeah, I work in corporate and we're well trained in what we say :-).

Your absolutely right but have we seen the presentation?

Bullet point does not say much when they are verbally given out facts and figure provided they did exactly that.  If someone can point us to a link that we can watch than we will get some question answer and then we will know.

That is exactly my point, when people want to look at the numbers from the Steam website  and say "well X plane 12 isn't doing all that well with just 400+ users and are less than X plane 11 compared to the other sim with "no context (sales figures for LR or sales figures from Aerosoft and any other outlet that sales X plane 12) and without consideration of user apathy because it's in beta, there are some would believe what they see and run with it, without caution.

Two can play that game, if LR feel confident to say that they are doing well then I say go for it.

I was surprised to hear the full release will be as soon as December.  I have enjoyed the beta so far and am really enjoying XP12, but no major update to the clouds in the next month will surprise me - perhaps LR is going to surprise us with a full release that includes a major cloud update?  I am not expecting clouds of the quality of MSFS, as MS / Asobo have had over two years to tweak them, but I must admit to have expected similar numbers of cloud types, even at a lower resolution.  The other niggling items like shimmering, flashing textures and depth issues with cloud rendering don't stop my enjoying XP12 at this stage, but I assume LR have fixes in the pipeline for these.

I was surprised as well but we are in early november so I think a lot can happen at the rate they have been going. So far its has been pretty stable for me so can't complain with only some of the outstanding issue you mention that need to be completed. But this caveat to not look for any major changes in the scenery side until the 12.1 release. They indicated this long before the beta release during one of the interviews with Ben. Now I could be wrong and they could surprise us but that's what my expectation are for now. I am looking forward to some of the payware update XP12 releases next year.

why not all?

iirc xp11 was sub 100 steam users per day for the first few months.

developer engagement, reception, sales, user interest, services etc all significantly greater than 5 years ago, for obvious reasons.
