another secret fps killer - and how to get rid of it

the other day, before starting MSFS I noticed an unusual high CPU load on 1 core, nearly 100% load with no other programs running in the background, or so I thought. the culprit it turned out was a Microsoft service:

Shellexperiencehost.exe

which supposedly was started by using the Windows built-in photo or image viewer. After killing this not needed service via task manager everything was back to normal. further details:

Shell Infrastructure Host has been using about 50% cpu usage and total cpu usage is 100%

60-130 fps. no CPU overclocking.

very nice.

Never had that problem but I'm also not using the default photo viewer, I use the freeware FastStone Image Viewer.

I mentioned this because I had never seen this before, it was totally unexpected, who would have thought that the Windows default photo viewer could cause such CPU load problems. another popular image viewer that does not exhibit this problem is IrfanView.

I had this problem as well, although I didn't know that  Shell Infrastructure Host was the cause. A few days ago I swtiched over to Irfanview as I didn't like Windows 11 photo app and noticed that my CPU load was way lower. I thus purely by coincidence solved the high cpu-load problem 🙂

The one above doesnt seem to be an issue for me - However I did a windows update a few days ago (right after the su 11 update - man I hate dueling updates for trying to track down issues) and found that afterwards news and interests task was suddenly randomly taking 20 to 30 percent cpu cycles (I have none to spare lol)...I killed via task manager and that seem to help - then I disabled complete from the task bar....such a whack a mole process and never ending......

Background apps .... all turned off ..

Startup apps .. all evaluated and enabled only if it is essential to the running of an essential program.

If i start my pc and it doesn't settle down to 1-2% cpu usage at the end of a windows startup sequence i start investigating. Only exception is the occasional running of the system antivirus.

This does not seem to be an issue for my PC but has come as a timely reminder to run task manager from time to time to check my CPU and memory usage.

Worth checking shortly after statrup and during flights.

Good find turbo! I use the Win11 default photo app all the time, also whilst running the sim.

thanks. it doesn't happen everytime, but when it did, it exhausted 1 core to nearly 100% !
