Stuttering

Featured Replies

I've narrowed mine down to AI traffic. Any time planes are taxiing, landing or taking off, my fps takes a big hit.  So i turned that down/off and it helped. Statics really doesn't seem to cause the stutters.

So I've not tried to remove AI traffic but I fly mainly on VATSIM using AIG models but I have noticed the following possibly since SU11

Mainly on departure/approach I get hard freezes of 15 - 60 secs where my GPU usage (observed in task manager) plummets to 0% - I mainly fly the big irons Fenix, PMDG and A310.  After say 30 secs GPU usage reverts back to something sensible and the sim comes back to life.  Anyone else?

I do get freezes, but only for 10-15 seconds and only after loading up an aircraft at an airport and looking around. It only happens once and the rest is smooth.

Yes I have this exact situation happen.  It happens less the less moving traffic i have at the airports.  Either way, its a problem.  And mostly on dx12 for me.

So you lock your FPS after running and sim manually every time? @Noel

Yep--because I use RTSS framerate max w/ Edge Sync which is easily done w/o stopping the sim.  I do it because letting the CPU and GPU full tilt to go from say 35fps to 48fps adds nothing and yet removes headroom to cope with sudden peak demands and requires more power and cooling all for no significant visual benefit.  The key is I have near perfect frametime variance with this method which delivers fluid animation w/o steep frame rates.

And, I do this every time because starting values (after engines running, AI traffic started, etc) vary based on plane and airport.  If I'm only 36 FPS after everything running I will lock at 30 minimum.  Almost always I'm well above 36FPS baseline.

We have almost identical systems,

I can pretty much sustain 60fps in the PMDG, A310 & Fenix, I  use FSLTL but just to populate traffic at the gate as I find live traffic kills my main thread inducing lower fps drops of 10 or more depending on the airport. I have tried to load my GPU settings as much as possible apart from Ultra volumetric clouds, this can really tank the fps in heavy weather situations even though my GPU usage doesn't go through the roof. I leave them on high. I would start by loading the sim on the runway at one of the airports you mentioned with all traffic disabled and start with ultra settings and then make some adjustments to see where your fps are at. I find I get the smoothest frame time by using Vsync - Application Controlled in NVCP and then on in the sim @ 100% monitor refresh rate and I lock frames to 59.90 in Riva

I just got a 55 inch LG QNED85 (Mini LED) TV and have been experimenting with VRR, I am finding if my fps drop maybe 5 or 6 it still stays smooth but any more can effect performance. I am pretty sure any larger fps drops are all main thread related and don't last too long before I am back up to 60. I don't tend to use large airports though I prefer smaller regional airports. I own Fly Tampa CYYZ and with FSLTL on default settings I am lucky to get 45 fps in a complex aircraft. I really believe now a stronger CPU is needed for those really taxing situations.

Out of curiosity, why do you have texture resolution off? Doesn’t that make your textures look really bad?

Do you mean Anisotropic filtering off? I was experimenting at the time with the same setting of 16X in the NVIDIA control pane rather than In the sim. Texture resolution was set to Ultra

Here I also have AF off in the sim but at 16x in the NV CP.  More sharpness in the distance…

How do you set up FSLTL to just have gate traffic?

Just set the IFR & VFR traffic sliders to zero and then select whatever you want under the historic parked aircraft, I normally use 4 or 5
