Merry Christmas everyone,

I'm noticing more and more that my excellent GTX1080 workhorse is struggling to render smooth MSFS 2020 gameplay in densely populated areas in IFR conditions. I've dialled down graphics settings to an acceptable minimum.

I want to purchase a new graphics card. My budget is £500 and I have no plans to upgrade anything else for at least 2 years.

Specs:

Core I9 9900k

DDR4 32GB 3200MHz

620W PSU

3440 x 1440

Would an RTX20xx series card be sufficient for 1440p or should I spend my money on an RTX3060Ti?

I would be grateful to hear from anyone who has a similar spec and budget.

Cheers all,

Dave.

I have the same set up you’ve listed.I have an 8 gig 2080. I have m.2 drives. 750 watt power supply handles everything fine. My 32 gigs ram is slower.  Had it now for going on 4 years and I’ve been very happy with it. I have a 34” dell ultrasharp with the same resolution you’ve listed. I run msfs, XP 11&12, and P3dV5. All run great. You have to choose your settings but you should be pleased. I run demanding scenery and aircraft. Get as much video ram as you can. My 8 gig 2080 would sometimes run out of ram with P3d. You’ll enjoy this set up.

Tomorrow I’m upgrading the video card to a 20 gig 7900XT and a 1300 watt power supply. Christmas treat to myself. The bigger power supply is future proofing and I got it for $40 more than a 1000W plus it’s a good name.

Good luck with the new set up.

At first I also wanted to change my GTX 1080 and change my I7 4790K afterwards. But I changed my mind and first changed my I7 4790K to the Ryzen 5800X3D and it was night and day!!!. Even with my GTX1080 it's incredibly efficient.I'm really in no hurry to change my GTX 1080 I'm currently with a SAMSUNG 4K QLED TV and v-sync ON 30FPS / Render Scaling 70% / 90% Ultra / Traffic FSLTL and it's smooth as silk... Every flight is pure happiness. And QLED TV is perfect! incredible brightness and no mirror effect.

I ended up buying a 3060 Ti.

Hugely overpriced at £400 but I couldn't afford a better Nvidia card and I'm too nervous to buy AMD!

It seems to strike a good balance with my I9 9900k.

50 FPS out of LGA in the FBW NEO will keep me happy for a few years.  Time to flog some old kit on eBay.

I have pretty much the same system as @gb09f (see specs in signature) I fly mostly P3DV5 but also MSFS. I run 3840 x 2160 with frames limited to 30 in NCP.

I'm thinking of upgrading the GPU now with the intention of upgrading the CPU/MB/RAM (to DDR5) at some future point. Probably to the 13900K. So my problem today is what GPU to upgrade to? I was thinking the ASUS ROG Strix NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Gaming Graphics Card as a balance between present/future performance and price. Is there a better alternative in similar price range? Would this work well with my 9900K for both sims today? with the 13900K in the future?

Any advice appreciated.

My current system is not much different from yours. My signature describes the system I'm assembling. I've decided to go all in and jump on an RTX 4090 GPU to pair with a 13900k. However, if I wasn't making a move into VR, I think the 4090 would be overkill for MSFS in 4K and I'd probably be looking at a 4070ti or 4080 (maybe a 7900xtx when it's got the bugs ironed out and is firing on all cylinders).

Thanks. Now I'm going to look carefully at the 4070ti & 4080 as opposed to slightly the more expensive and less available 3090.

I would absolutely look at the 4080 now especially if you use MSFS and have a 1440p monitor or larger (res).  Frame gen alone is worth the cost.  I did a small report at the hardware video sub forums about my 4080 purchase.  60 fps with the most detailed of addons.... anywhere.  100+ fps with most addons outside of large cities.  I run a 12700K at 4.7 with 32gb ddr5 ram.

@ryanbatc, thanks. I read through your post, great info! Yesterday I pulled the trigger on a 4080, ASUS TUF GAMING RTX 4080 OC. I'll report back after i get it late next week. I'm curious if it'll be a big improvement paired with my 9900K. Eventually, I'll do a major upgrade to the 13900K and DDR5.

You'll see a great improvement now using frame generation (make sure HAGS is enabled) to allow for it.  If it's greyed out in msfs you may need to enable it in UserOpt cfg

But yeah you'll see an immediate boost.  Then you'll see a new boost when you get that 13900k haha.

i run a 5800x3d with a 4090 on 60hz 55inch 4k tv

use frame generation and lod 400  taa , loccked 59fps in riva.

gpu load 50-85% , vram use is 20gb and that with a flight from esnn- essa not the most demanding place.

i think the 4080 or 4070ti is the best bung for buck even at 4k , think the vram is the limiting factor.

Got my 4080 and installed yesterday. FYI it is a MONSTER card. I had to remove a fan and rack in the back of the case to fit the card in.

Ran in developer and sure enough, now Main Thread limited.  On Ultra with frame gen on I got ~ 55FPS in an intense SOCAL area at dusk and night. What settings/tweaks would you recommend to get the most out of this until I do a CPU/motherboard upgrade?

Turn TLOD down a bit, say to 100 like it is in the high preset. Personally, I'd be happy with the worst case 55 FPS you are already getting, which may already be close to your TV's max refresh of 60Hz anyway if it that's what your TV is limited to.

Thanks. Now I've turned both TLOD and OLOD to 100 and I went back to VSYNC 50% (30Hz). I also set the anti aliasing to the Performance setting for nVidia DLSS super resolution. Not sure what impact that setting has.

I am getting a few pasues of a 3 to 5 secs each flight in the HJet.

That's strange about the 3 - 5 second pauses. Does it happen in a certain area, phase of flight or on particular aircraft?

I would not use DLSS with a 4080 as you are underworking your video card and getting lower clarity than you have to. Just leave it on TAA and leave turn frame generation on.
