Massive stutters upon final KSEA with low CPU/GPU/VRAM loads

Featured Replies

Haven't seen this in many months now, bigtime stuttering upon final approach, and it's happened several times now post SU12 install.  What's really odd on this last flight is CPU load (RTSS, so actually lower than what this OSD displays) is low 70%, and GPU was around mid 60's (typical here) until on final approach then GPU utilization when well down into the low 30-40% range and w/ massive stuttering could barely land the plane.  No new GPU drivers, no other changes to the sim and how I operate it.  So I had removed most all potential culprits from the Comm Folder just prior to this flight from KSLC because the same thing happened last night in the same plane (PMDG 738) except FTV was poor even during the first half of the flight with recent prior flights in that plane and FBW 320NX.  Here's the first 10 minutes of today's flight, w/ Comm Folder entries removed (Mainly GSX, FSLTL, AccuSeason and a few other minor ones) and it's perfect as it has been for months now.  I thought great, I can just restore each item removed from the Comm Folder and all will be well again:

But then on approach in to KSEA, this horror w/ the weird reduction in GPU loading:

GPU temp was dandy as are all temps.  I had not done the PMDG update yet, but again 95% of this flight was perfect.

What's the "local cache"?  I deleted and rebuilt the Rolling Cache along w/ deleting the DX shader cache immediately after SU12 was installed.

I wonder if these issues could be server related Noel,

If you have this happen again maybe you could try switching to one of the European servers. I found for the first 4 or 5 days after SU12 dropped my frametime seemed to jump around a fair bit but now it seems to have settled down.

I haven't flown since last week, hopefully I will get a chance tomorrow

I hear you. I deleted this twice after the update and got a better result. After a restart, delete, restart again and it was a lot better. I also left DX11 and have DX12 and really like it. Better performance for me

Could be I guess but I did look at server latency for west coast and it was at 42ms when that was happening which is par for that server.  I'm leaving to go out of state for 3 weeks starting Thursday so lots of time to see if it settles down.  I've never seen this level of intense stuttering it was acting more like a major hardware or driver issue but what I will do if it happens again is go to offline and see it if resolves.

As best I know, you cannot switch to another server without using a VPN.  I believe the server choices in the sim are for Multiplayer only.

This happens for quite some time now at certain locations. I can see this happening at LPPT frequently. Also happened to me at KSEA. I'm not 100% sure as it was a long time ago, but UHPP seemed to suffer from the same symptom. Deleting the cache, updating or going back in driver versions does nothing.

Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't and i still didn't manage to figure out what's causing this.

Just to check, I flew kPDX-KSEA with the ILS16R approach in the PMDG -700 and most setting on high end except for TLOD=150. MSFS held a locked 30 fps for almost the entire journey, with a maybe a few seconds in the high 20s on short final. I was on VATSIM with a few planes coming out of KSEA, so no AI.

Nothing here that helps the OP, I guess. I use the local cache and haven't cleared it in some time. It doesn't look like it's a general problem.

Hi Bert,

I see that it says multiplayer server, does that not change your server if you select a different location such as Europe?

It changes the server that you see other users on, when in multiplayer mode, but not the server that streams your scenery as you fly.. To the best of my knowledge..

Similar behavior today again this time KATL>KROA in the PMDG 738 then tried w/ FBW 320NX and up at 20k feet perfectly great headroom in CPU/GPU/VRAM and yet frames jumping around between 26 and 37 w/ my lock set at 33.  This doesn't happen at all normally it's all very predictable in terms of frames getting threatened if hardware is overloaded, but it clearly isn't.  I'm heading out of state for 3 weeks so will just send up wishes somehow some way it will resume normalcy when I return!  Dang, I've been so spoiled now for over 3 months but there's a nasty gremlin in there right now, in Win 10 now, in MSFS servers who knows!  I believe this started with SU12 but it's not been either consistent nor severe, I've lost the perfection I became accustomed to 😪

I've had this same problem lately. I don't use a rolling cache...so dunno if that could be the problem. I'll try clearing the Dx shaders and see if that helps. It's a similar bug to the old PMDG bug before touchdown. I remember you had to "preload all sounds" or something to prevent it from stuttering on final. It's the same kind of stutter, if that makes sense. Almost as if it's loading something right before getting into the final stage of landing. I've only noticed it when PG is on near the airport, so maybe PG has something to do with it...who knows.

  • 3 weeks later...

I have same, strange degrading of performance in short flights lately and landing with a bit of stutter where it used to be smooth and high FPS. I did do a Win11 update which I have a niggling feeing was around this problem started, rather than the SU12 update. I am sure performance was OK after SU12 for a while. I also wonder if the AI models are involved because I can do a smooth high FPS flight without them in Community folder, but when I revert to my usual flying (100% VATSIM with FSLTL, FS traffic and AIG all providing models) it tanks in the cruise. But disconnecting from VATSIM does not restore performance, it’s as if the models are filling up memory and clogging it without being flushed. I’ll do more testing! As I say it all worked fine like this a few weeks ago so something has changed.
