Now I'm officially old...

Featured Replies

My daughter got the house sold and I have moved to an apartment in a retirement community.  Uggh!  Everyone here has a walker and half of them are on oxygen 24/7.  I think I'm the healthiest one here.  At least I walk better than most of them.

They feed us three meals a day.  Breakfast is OK but dinner leaves something to be desired...like they think everyone is a diabetic.

But I have a small kitchenette in my apartment and yesterday I went shopping and sticked up so I can make my own dinner if their dinner menu is not up to my standards.

Kudos to my daughter.  In this slow real-estate market she got the house sold in less than 30 days.  She found a cash buyer and we close on Tuesday.

I guess I'm officially a cranky old man now.

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

No you're not, think of it this way, you just moved to a different house.   You just happen to have some new neighbors who don't get around so well.

So, the only real difference is that now you are officially "a cranky old man"... 🤣

Congratulations to your daughter for arranging the sale so quickly. I have to do all my own cooking. Fortunately, though I am still physically able to accomplish this, the cleanup afterwards is something of a pain, literally.

My primary doctor at the VA arranged for me to have a home health aide to come by three times a week for about three hours to ensure I'm taking my meds, perform nail care, change sheets, do the laundry, clean the cottage, and be available while I shower so I'd have someone present should I slip and fall. The problem is that the Area Agency on Aging is unable to reliably provide for all of their clients, since there aren't enough folks willing to work. So far, the "aides" are more noted for their absence than their presence. 😢

About a week ago, I was rummaging through a tote box still on my front porch when my left leg grew weak and collapsed, leaving me to fall to the concrete on my butt, followed by rolling off the porch to land on the ground around four feet down into a deep pile of leaves. Ever since I've had a lot of pain in my left shoulder. A few days ago, I went to the Community Care Center at St. Vincent's hospital for x-rays to see if perhaps I'd cracked my clavicle. The results were negative, meaning that it is likely just a bone bruise.

Again, I'm glad to read that you are in what I truly hope will prove to be a safer place, since you should have plenty of people around should you need help with anything.

Betty and I shared the kitchen duties.  She would cook on one day and I would cook on the next.  We did have an agreement that we cleaned up after ourselves.  She used every pot and pan in the kitchen had quite a cleanup mess after dinner.  I'm a clean as you go guy.  One I was through with a pot I'd either use it gain for something else or wash it and put it away.

Breakfast was different.  While she settled for a bowl of cereal I'm a hearty breakfast guy...my favorite meal of the day.  A semi-large bowl of fruit (half an apple, a tangerine, and a half dozen or more grapes), a half glass of vegetable juice, fried eggs and bacon or scrambled eggs and sausage, a heavily buttered slightly burnt English muffin, and a cup of tea.  I always did my own breakfast dishes.

Yeah, from a 2200sqft house with lots of room to ramble around into a tiny 365sqft apartment.

If someone made me 3 square meals a day that would be kind of nice.  I currently have a herniated disc in my lower back and it's really affecting my mobility...not to mention painful...

You fly the Quest Kodiak in flight sim, don't you?  Maybe some of your neighbors would find that interesting as Charlie notes.  I know I would.  It's always neat seeing other people's flight sim setups and how they fly.  And what they know, and don't know, compare notes so-to-speak.

Just curious, Noel...Do they serve the 3 meals buffet style or do they have a list of the different dishes being served that evening?  My brother-in-law's parents were in a similar facility in Tucson, Az. and the dinners were outstanding.  As guests, we paid $10 for dinner with them and the selections were wonderful and included wine or beer.

At least you won't get lost during  a late night forced march to the head.😁

Thank you.

It is not buffet style.  But the menu items are pretty meager.  Meals are served to your table by waitresses.

They just have two different entrees for each meal.   This evening it was chicken nuggets and dipping sauce plus macaroni and cheese or a club sandwich and macaroni and cheese.  Tomato soup served to everyone and strawberries and bananas for desert.  Ice water and ice tea were both served.

Portions are pretty small in my estimation but I heard no complaining.

No fresh fruit.  Yesterday I went shopping and got apples, tangerines and grapes for the refrigerator in my kitchenette.  They only serve orange or cranberry juice for breakfast so I got a couple bottles of vegetable juice for myself.  Before I go to breakfast I have already had my vegetable juice and fruit bowl.

Scrambled or fried eggs with bacon or sausage are available every morning.  This morning French toast was the only item on the menu.

Last night the only items on the dinner menu were tacos or a chicken wrap.  I'm not that fond of tacos so I opted for the chicken wrap but only ate half of it.

The food is pretty bland but there is salt and pepper and ketchup on the table.

I will be supplementing the dining room meals with my own dishes in my room.  I have a refrigerator and a stove in the kitchenette so I am not dependent on the dining room.

I go to breakfast and dinner to socialize with the people at my table.  I have always skipped lunch.

That's one old age effect that I haven't been bothered with.  I go to bed at midnight and wake up about 5:30 or 6:00.  I normally sleep through although there have been times I woke up about 4:00 for a head call.

Be sure to make friends, Noel.  My mother-in-law moved into a retirement community in order to be closer to family and because she was no longer physically able to take proper care of a house and property.  She moved into her apartment and did go to meals, at least some meals, but otherwise stayed in her apartment, alone.  That was very bad for her mental health, which declined quickly and forced a move to assisted living, then memory care, and then she passed away.  Stay active, make friends, maybe it is possible to form a flight sim group or at least an aviation appreciation group.

My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.

I think it would be prudent for me to just sit quietly and get the lay of the land for a couple of weeks before starting anything like that.

Weren't you looking into a similar place near your daughter in one of the Carolina's?  At least being closer to family.

A sudden reminder I'm getting old came a few months ago when a young girl offered me her seat on a crowded train. First time that ever happened to me. I felt flustered and politely and firmly declined, but later laughed about it. It seemed like only one second separated me from having dual EU/US citizenship to picking up a third, Senior. Weird how when you're in your youth, thinking back to school days, how some 50 minute classes seemed to last about 12 hours, and later on in life a few years seem to go by in a matter of minutes.
